Analysts: Future Not Looking Good For Nokia    [ 18-06-2012 17:10 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Reuters & Business Week via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia hasn't been doing too well recently and for all intents and purposes has bet its future on Windows Phone. So goes Windows Phone, so goes Nokia. Now the thing is Windows Phone hasn't exactly been a major hit with consumers; sure it has received strong critical acclaim and handsets are selling well in some markets, but overall it remains something of a bit players compared with Android and iOS. What this means is that Nokia hasn't been bringing home the goods and things aren't looking too good going forward either according to those watching the company.

Last Friday Reuters and BusinessWeek both ran pieces on Nokia with some industry analysts contributing their two pence worth. What they had to say doesn't make for pleasant reading in Espoo. For example, UBS predicted that Nokia was going to have to "... significantly discount its new Microsoft Lumia products in order ... to gain any traction with retailers, operators and consumers". For a company struggling to turn a profit that isn't an appealling prospect. It wasn't just UBS though, Canaccord chimed in with a prediction of "... a continued sharp decline in Symbian smartphone sales ... combined with a slow ramp in Windows smartphone volume". Other analysts pointed to Nokia's continued 'baggage' in terms of old operating systems as something that was holding the company back and putting off potential buyers.

Indeed, on the issue of Nokia being bought Charlie Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Co., summed it up simply:

... if Nokia doesn't come out of its funk within a year, Nokia is going to be finished.

Video: Sharp To Launch New Android UI - Feel UX    [ 18-06-2012 17:01 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Sharp via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One way of differentiating yourself amidst a sea of smartphone lookalikes is to get your own UI going. Sharp already has its own UI for Android in the Far East, but they're looking to launch a brand new UI with the help of design company frog. The new look, dubbed Feel UX, is described as being "highly personalized" and "visually stunning". Cliches aside the new UI does actually look pretty good, at least from what can be seen from the video below. The highlights of Feel UX should apparently include photo browsing and widgets that don't require the device to be unlocked along with "real-time" weather displays. Check out the video to get a glimpse of it right now.
