UK Advertising Authority Declares iPhone 4 Thinnest Smartphone    [ 14-09-2011 17:31 ]

The UK's advertising authority, the Advertising Standards Authority, has stepped into the smartphone arena to decide on which is the world's thinnest smartphone. In a mirror of the wider war between them the two contenders are the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Apple iPhone 4. Both companies have been claiming their respective products to be the world's thinnest and both have decent enough claims to the title.

The iPhone 4 is 9.3mm thick whilst the Galaxy S II is 8.71mm thick. That's a pretty open and shut book you would think. Not quite. You see the iPhone 4 is a flat slab so it is 9.3mm thick at all points. The Galaxy S II on the other hand is not uniform and the 8.71mm figure is the thinnest part of it, but there are parts of the device 9.91mm thick. That was enough for the ASA to issue a ruling:

Apple pointed out that the Galaxy S II had prominent bulges at the top of the device. Apple said consumers would not be interested in the thinnest part of the device, but in its overall measurements, as these would, for example, affect whether the device could fit into a pocket or purse.

ASA agrees with that complaint and ruled in Apple's favour. That means that Apple can advertise the iPhone 4 as the world's thinnest smartphone, in the UK at least, and Samsung ... well Samsung appears to have been left with the thick end of the wedge,

Analyst Predicts PlayBook Headed The Same Way As HP TouchPad    [ 14-09-2011 17:28 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

RIM is gearing up to report its second quarter results tomorrow, but the outlook is not very good according to some analysts. Estimates for RIM's progress in Q2 are said to be better than market expectations, but, and here is the rub, that's pretty much because analysts have lowered their expectations. That will help RIM in the short term of course, but it does nothing to address the root of RIM's problems.

Brian Blair, an analyst at Wedge Partners, put forward the view that there is no"meaningful evidence" of RIM actually getting back on track. He went on to say that BlackBerry 7 devices have had a mixed result so far and even though they are a step up from previous RIM devices they are likely two years out of date in terms of the market as a whole.

Moving onto RIM's tablet, the PlayBook, Blair is more damning:

Last quarter RIM talked about shipping 500,000 units but did not speak of sell-through for obvious reasons. Channel fill could turn up another decent shipment number this year in the 500,000-700,000 unit range but we believe sell-through has been weak enough that the number will trend down over the year and RIM and will likely send the PlayBook into the same graveyard as the HP TouchPad.

Oh dear. That's not a very bright road ahead if Blair is to believed, but it does follow the trend of late, which has seen RIM loose mindshare and as a result marketshare. Simply put RIM appears to have lost its mojo and for the time being at least it can't get it back.
