Tim Cook: Kindle Fire Isn't A Concern For Apple    [ 19-10-2011 20:38 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Investor's Business Daily     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Amazon's Kindle Fire is apprently no real threat to Apple's iPad dominance according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. During an earnings call on Tuesday Cook spoke about the Kindle Fire and competition in general in the tablet market:

We've seen several competitors come to market to try to compete with the iPad. Some had different form factors, different price points. And I think it's reasonable to say that none of these have gained any traction thus far. And in fact, as all of those competitors were coming to market, our share actually went up, such that in the June quarter, according to IDC, we were responsible for three out of every four tablets sold.

What Cook says here isn't untrue, but it is perhaps a little too dismissive of the Kindle Fire. Amazon is a big player with a well established and far reaching ecosystem. It has the capability to sell, distribute and support tablet sales in a way few other players in the market do right now. Of course Apple is no slouch in those departments itself and they are currently dominating the tablet market so it will be a hard slog for Amazon to make any serious headway.

Andy Rubin, the head honcho at Android, recently revealed that there are around 6 million Android tablets in the wild at the moment. That's an impressive figure that might give Amazon hope that the market for an iPad alternative is definitely there, however, in the 4th financial quarter alone Apple managed to shift 11.1 million iPads, almost double the totality of Android tablets.

Ballmer: Android Is Too Complicated    [ 19-10-2011 19:49 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Steve Ballmer's been speaking in public again and and usual has been saying things that people like me like to write about. Ballmer isn't known for beating around the bush and this time he's been voicing his opinion on Android, the world's leading smartphone platform. The catchphrase line he uttered at the Web 2.0 conference yesterday is a real classic:

You don't need to be a computer scientist to use a Windows Phone, but I think you do to use an Android phone.

The obvious implication being that Android is a complicated platform not for the regular Joe. Ballmer wasn't about to stop there though and followed that up with "It is very hard to be excited, for me, about the Android phones". Apart from being a bit of a silly statement (he is after all CEO of a rival company) it doesn't really say anything about Android, just Ballmer's biased view of it.

Of course Ballmer may have good reason to be taking pot shots at Android, Microsoft's own Windows Phone platform hasn't exactly been blazing a trail since it first launched a year ago. Whilst Microsoft managed to get some big name manufacturers onboard and despite a generally warm welcome from the technorati, Windows Phone has so far failed to attain any serious marketshare let alone become a serious challenger to either Android or iOS, the two dominant platforms.

Much is being made of Nokia's imminent entry to the Windows Phone space with the hope being that it can give the platform a serious boost. Mind you if Ballmer feels he needs to trash talk Android instead of talking up Nokia perhaps he himself isn't all that confident of Nokia's chances.
