Samsung To Provide Apple With A6 Chips For iPhone 5    [ 18-10-2011 16:58 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The mobile industry is a funny old game at times and it can really throw up some unexpected situations. Case in point, Apple and Samsung. Currently the two companies are locked in a heated legal dispute that spans the globe with each of them seeking to have the other's products blocked from sale in a conflict over patents. That isn't stopping Samsung providing Apple with quad-core A6 chips for its next iPhone though, at least according to a report in the Korea Times.

"Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner", so says an anonymous parts supplier speaking to the Korea Times.

It's a bizzare situation that Samsung will be providing Apple with a crucial component for a device Apple is using as the basis for its patent dispute against Samsung. That though, as they say, is business.

iPhone 5 To Appear In Summer 2012?    [ 18-10-2011 15:24 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: 9to5 Mac     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The iPhone 4S might just have started amusing customers with Siri's ramblings, but even so it's old news for the technosphere. So we start the iPhone rumour mill all over again with the latest on the iPhone 5. Many wondered why there was no iPhone 5 this year, but to be honest it isn't a huge surprise that the 4S showe up instead given Apple's past record. Even so the iPhone 5 is still the object of much water cooler discussion so when can we expect it?

Well 9to5 Mac are running a story saying that the iPhone 5 will in fact appear in the summer of 2012, not even a year after the 4S launched. So why the quick turnaround? Well apparently the iPhone 5 was due to be released this year, but that project, which was being headed by Steve Jobs himself, was running up against delays, which meant that it simply couldn't be ready in time for the Christmas season. Hence the 4S.

Of course we're lightyears away from summer 2012 in mobile phone terms so really anything could happen between then and now. If the iPhone 5 was ever really on the cards for this year anyway.

Samsung Still Manages To Top 30 Million Galaxy S/S II Sales Despite Legal Wrangles    [ 18-10-2011 14:39 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Samsung     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung has been announcing some impressive results for its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones. Globally the South Korean manufacturer has sold more than 30 million of the two models combined. The Galaxy S II in particular has been doing well and is in fact Samsung best selling smartphone ever, selling 3 million units in just 55 days. Perhaps more surprising is the continued success of these smartphones despite the global legal dispute Samsung has been embroiled in with Apple. Nevertheless, or perhaps even because of the increased publicity, Samsung doesn't appear to be missing a step in its stride.

The full corporate thingymajig is below:

Samsung celebrates 30 million global sales of GALAXY S and GALAXY SII

Global popularity with customers drives momentum for Samsung’s flagship smartphones

SEOUL, Korea – October 17th, 2011 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a leading mobile handset provider, today announced that its Samsung GALAXY S and GALAXY SII smartphones have achieved a combined total of 30 million global sales.

GALAXY SII has set a new record for Samsung, generating more than 10 million sales – quicker than any device in Samsung’s history. The device also recently received five out of the total ten Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2011 in the UK as well as 2011 Gadget Award for being chosen as the best smartphone of the year by T3, confirming it as a run-away favorite smartphone with consumers this year. It continues to gain traction as Samsung’s flagship smartphone – a stylishly designed, slim and ultra-portable device combining an unrivalled viewing experience with powerful dual-core processor performance.

Launched in 2010, Samsung GALAXY S reached almost 20 million unit sales, making it the highest-selling mobile device in Samsung’s portfolio to date, and another record-breaker for the company and the mobile market.

Since launching to high critical acclaim two years ago, the GALAXY S range has continued to gain popularity among consumers and propelled the GALAXY brand to one of the most recognized mobile brands in the world, with Samsung now the largest Android smartphone vendor and the second largest phone vendor overall worldwide (IDC).

“Since its launch only five months ago, GALAXY SII has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe. This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind GALAXY S, which we launched at Mobile World Congress 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

“The phenomenal success of these smartphones once again demonstrates how the GALAXY S smartphones is setting the standard for smart mobile technology around the world.”

Video: OmniTouch Uses Any Surface For Interaction    [ 18-10-2011 07:59 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

For as long as I've been writing about mobile technology I can remember various rumblings, musings and promises concerning new forms of interaction with our devices. Everything from inbuilt projectors to e-ink to holographic displays have been trundled out for discussion at one point or another, but nothing much has ever come of those discussions, at least not commercially anyway. However, this concept from Carnegie Mellon University is looking pretty damned sweet.

The concept, and it is still very much at the prototype stage, was developed by the University in conjunction with Microsoft Research and it can be summed up pretty easily: you can interact with apps using any available surface as an input/output source. It accomplishes this using a pico projector to display an interface on your chosen surface and then uses a short range depth sensor to track your fingers as they do the interacting.

The surface you choose can be pretty much anything from your hand to a wall to a notepad. The system can deal with multi-touch input and can even track your fingers as they work in three diminesions.

The big drawback at the moment is the size of the system; it's shoulder mounted. That doesn't lend itself well to use in mobile devices, but as ever as the technology progresses it will no doubt be made smaller and smaller until the point is reached where it can hopefully fit inside something a little more inconspicous than a shoulder mounted setup.
