Andy Rubin, the big cheese at Android, has been dropping some hints about the forthcoming Google music store. Speaking at the Asia D conference on Wednesday Rubin commented that the store would "have a little twist" and that it "won't just be selling 99 cent tracks". What does that mean exactly? A few theories have already been put forward including a Spotify model of ad supported free listening (very Googlesque) or perhaps it will have a subscription offer instead of just allowing for piecemeal purchases. Of course it could be that Rubin has an annoying sense of humour and that Google will be heavily promoting the works of Chubby Checker..
It shouldn't be too long to wait to find out. The most optimistic reports suggest Google will launch its music store within the coming weeks whilst the more conservative reports are saying sometime this quarter. The latter no doubt springs from the fact that Google is apparently only close to confirming a deal with one of the major record labels, EMI. They'll presumably have to get the other big labels onboard before anything serious can happen.

The passing of important figures has a tendency to foster the growth of stories, rumours and in some case even legends. The passing of Steve Jobs earlier this month is no exception and already we can see a sort of mythos appearing around him. Adding to that is an anecdote from Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank in Japan.
Son was speaking to the U.S. amabassador to Japan recently where he recounted an incident that occurred the day before Jobs passed away. Son was having a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook when Cook had to interrupt the meeting to take a phonecall from Jobs.
I visited Apple for the announcement of the iPhone 4S [at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California]. When I was having a meeting with Tim Cook, he said, 'Oh Masa, sorry I have to quit our meeting.' I said, 'Where are you going?' He said, 'My boss is calling me.' That was the day of the announcement of the iPhone 4S. He said that Steve is calling me because he wants to talk about their next product. And the next day, he died.
It's both touching and interesting to hear this account of Jobs' final days. On the one hand we see a man who was so driven, so passionate, and so committed to his life's work, his dream, that he literally devoted his last living moments to it. It's also endearing to see Tim Cook refer to Jobs as 'his boss' even though at that stage Cook was the man in charge of Apple. For Cook, and probably everyone at Apple, Steve Jobs would always be the boss.
Masayoshi Son was clearly moved himself as he explained his reaction to the incident:
Even one day before he passed away, the first subject he wanted to call Tim Cook about…he wanted to talk about the next product… That's the kind of spirit a true entrepreneur would continue to have until they die. He was very sick, very ill. But the announcement of their newest product made him live longer. Physically he could have died much earlier. But his passion, his love for his own company and dream, about the next products, that made him energized.
What was that product Jobs called Cook about? A new iPhone? A new tablet? Something entirely new perhaps? Whatever it turns out to be it will be a very special product indeed. It will be the last product Jobs himself worked on.
