RIM To Give Users Free Apps As Compensation    [ 17-10-2011 19:10 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Slashgear     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Last week's BlackBerry outage left plenty of users decidedly unhappy after they found they couldn't access their email or browse the web, sometimes for days at a time. The outage was major news around the world and we even had Mike Lazaridis appear on video apologising for the disruption. Many wondered though what, if any, compensation would be forthcoming. Well today RIM announced just that in the form of freep apps.

The apps in question usually cost money and collectively the 12 that are on offer are valued at around $100 so it's a decent enough offer in terms of monetary value. The apps include titles such as iSpeech Translator Pro, SIMS 3 and Shazam Encore. Now that's all very well and good, but one has to wonder whether a bunch of free apps is really going to do much to restore confidence in RIM, especially amongst business and enterprise clients.

At any rate the freebies start on Wednesday and the offer will run for a month.

iPhone 4S Sells 4 Million In 1st Weekend    [ 17-10-2011 19:05 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Apple     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

If the introduction of the iPhone 4S left some decidedly under-wowed then the subsequent sales performance should have you suitably floored. The initial pre-order rush saw over a million handsets ordered, but Apple have announced that over the weekend the iPhone 4S sold in excess of 4 million units. That's in just three days. Of course that figure will no doubt flatten out a tad once the initial upgrade frenzy has subsided, but even so the iPhone 4S looks to be off to an extremely solid start.

Video: Google Uses Google Wallet To Pay For Customers' Shopping    [ 17-10-2011 18:56 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Google     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

NFC payment options have beenpromised for awhile, but it's really only now that they are showing signs of taking off in any serious way. To help promote their Google Wallet service the Big G decided to send out teams of people in New York and San Francisco to offer to pay for people's purchases and in the process showcase the system. The result? Well by the over-excited reactions of the people involved it seems it's something of ahit although having had their shopping paid for by Google no doubt upped the excitement factor too.
