iOS 5 Launch - 'Unprecedented' Traffic Levels    [ 13-10-2011 18:50 ]

Author: Serge Novikov     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Yesterday's iOS 5 launch seems to have been pretty popular ...perhaps a little too popular according to AAISP, a UK based core service provider. Monitoring traffic levels during the release the firm noticed a huge increase in traffic, so much so that at one point it was described as being "... worse than the world cup traffic!".

Many users reported delays in downloading the update through iTunes as well as problems connecting to Apple's servers. The blame for this was laid at Apple's door by some, but given the scale of the traffic zooming through the tubes yesterday that is perhaps unfair. Indeed at one point AAISP described the 1 Gb/s traffic levels as a result of the iOS 5 launch as unprecedented:

Usage has just reached unprecidented [sic] levels - we have not seen anything like this...

BlackBerry Outage Over Says Mike Lazaridis    [ 13-10-2011 18:33 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: RIM     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Great BlackBerry Outage of 2011 is over. At least that'sthe word from joint-CEO Mike Lazaridis. In a press conference earlier today Lazaridis promised a full investigation as to what happened to cause a global blackout for BlackBerry users that spanned three days. In his statement Lazaridis apologised, saying "We know we've let many of you down. You expect more from us. I expect more from us".

You can see Lazaridis' statement in the video below:

Ok so Lazaridis has apologised and we've heard about the 'tireless' effort being put into the situation, but what exactly was the problem? Well we know that the outage was a result of a failure in a 'dual redundant high capacity core switch'. That technobabble is about all we have to go on at the moment, but RIM have promised an investigation. Of course you don't have an investigation if you know what went wrong so basically RIM has no idea at the moment.

All this is great to discuss on tech blogs, but what about those depending upon their BlackBerry for communication? Well RIM has made no commitment to offering compensation yet and given the scale of the problem that's easy to understand. Meanwhile some network operators have been mulling the possibility of compensation, but again nothing is definite at the moment.

All in all not a good week for RIM: global service outage, no idea what happened and no idea if compensation will be forthcoming. To quote Mike Lazaridis "It's been my goal to provide reliable, real time, communications around the world. We did not deliver on that goal this week. Not even close".

Scott Forstall - The 'Mini-Steve'    [ 13-10-2011 16:01 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Businessweek     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Today I came across an interesting piece from Businessweek on Scott Forstall. You may know Forstall as the senior vice president of iOS at Apple, but chances are you don't know very much about him as a person. There's good reason for that because Apple, in the words of their spokesman Steve Dowling, does not cooperate with media profiles of executives. That didn't stop Businessweek from compiling a profile of Forstall though and it makes for fascinating reading.

The article presents a picture of a man who is a contrast with himself; on the one hand inspiring great loyalty from his subordinates, whilst on the other rubbing his fellow executives up the wrong way. It's a very Jobsian caricature and for good reason; in some regards Forstall could be considered a protégé of Jobs:

In many ways, Forstall is a mini-Steve. He's a hard driving manager who obsesses over every detail. He has Jobs's knack for translating technical, feature-set jargon into plain English.

If Forstall shares Jobs' attention to detail and driven personality then he also shares Jobs' tendency to be a polarising figure, especially when it comes to his fellow executives "They say he has such a fraught relationship with other members of the exectuive team - including lead designer Jony Ive and Mac hardware chief Bob Mansfield - that they avoid meetings with him unless Tim Cook is present".

Jobs was leading the company, Forstall isn't. Can those Jobsian qualities be used to push Apple forward in Steve's absence? Can Tim Cook keep Forstall's more divisive traits in check, or will they end up splitting the company due to friction and politicking?

You can read the Businessweek article here.

BlackBerry Outage Spreads To 'Almost Every Planet'    [ 13-10-2011 13:21 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: CNN     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Well we knew the BlackBerry outage was bad, but it appears to have taken a turn for the worse according to CNN as service disruption has now apparently spread to 'almost every planet'.
