Video: Cluzee Offers Competition For Siri    [ 29-11-2011 17:09 ]

Siri has been a big selling point for the iPhone 4S, indeed for some it is the only selling point, and it has pretty much lived up to its promise. So good is Siri in fact that it hasn't been uncommon to see Android users asking around for an equivalent service for their device. There hasn't really been one to match Siri although Google are no doubt hard at work refining their voice recognition services and coming up with something suitable. Until then though you might want to check out Cluzee, which might just be the first real competitor for Siri.

It doesn't have quite the breadth of commands that Siri does, but the functionality is similar. Ask Cluzee what your schedule looks like and it will read you a list of what you have on that day. It can send emails for you (and texts); look for restuarants and hotels, search for deals by using your buying history, etc. All pretty much par for the course if it's going up against Siri.

There are some nice touches to Cluzee though such as adding in some extra information to requests. For example, Cluzee recommended that the user avoid a certain street because of road works if he wanted to make it to a doctor's appointment on time when the appointment was mentioned.

The app will be available to Android users today (Tuesday), but a cloud based version is in the pipeline that will be useable by anyone who has a mobile, computer, tablet or any device that can connect to the net basically. Android users can head to the Market to check it out of course, but for the rest of you here is a video until that cloud service gets off the ground.

Video: Ice Cream Sandwich Running On The N900 (Sort Of)    [ 29-11-2011 16:24 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Cool Smartphone     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The N900 is one of those rare handsets that has a status and fascination beyond any commercial success it achieved. The reasons for that are probably too deep to cover here, but suffice it to say that there are a lot of people who like the N900, and especially those who use it as a testbed. Case in point is one developer by the name of Drunkdebugger who has been hard at work porting the latest version of Android to the N900. It's not perfect by any means (Drunkdebugger calls it a pre-pre-alpha build), but it does work (sort of). It's pretty buggy as you would expect from such an early stage of work and as you can see in the video below it is prone to the odd crash. However, fans of the N900 can keep their phone ticking a bit longer now (once the kinks are ironed out).

iOS 5.1 Beta Released For Devs    [ 29-11-2011 14:27 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: 9to5Mac     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A beta version of iOS 5.1 has just been released to developers and it's causing a bit of a stire due to the product codes within. More on that in a moment, but first just a note to say that this update is hopefully the one that will finally see the iPhone 4S' battery issues laid to rest. The update will be available for the iPhone 3GS and beyond as well as the iPad and third and fourth generation iPod Touches.

Ok so what about those product codes? Well three different products have been found within the beta update that are creating a fair bit of chatter in those circles interested in such things.

First up we have a reference to an 'iPad 2.4'. This is conjectured to be an iPad with a modem from U.S. network Sprint. Nothing too exciting then and to be honest it isn't even known whether such a device would see the light of day before the next incarnation of the iPad.

Of more interest is the code 'J33', which 9to5Mac speculates refers to a new model of Apple TV. No not an actual TV, just the current Apple TV box.

Last, but certainly not least, is the code 'iPhone 5.1'. It's been rumoured that Apple was indeed working on an iPhone 5 before deciding to release the iPhone 4S instead and here we have another allusion to that possibility.
