Google Axing 7 More Products    [ 23-11-2011 20:17 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BBC     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google are in the midst of a spring clean, announcing that they are culling another seven products. The idea behind the cull is to simplify the range ofproducts Google offers, at least that's what Google are saying in the blog post they made about it.

We're in the process of shutting a number of products which haven't had the impact we'd hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward. Overall, our aim is to build a simpler, more intuitive, truly beautiful Google user experience.

The seven products getting the chop are, in no particular order:

  • Google Wave
  • Google Bookmarks List
  • Google Friends Connect
  • Google Gears
  • Google Search Timeline
  • Knol
  • Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal

Not all of these products will be decommissioned at the same time, for example, Wave is going the way of the dinosaurs come April whilst Knol will be out for the count next October.

Some may see this cleaning action as a sign of weakness, after all the products that are being dropped are largely ones that have had no real impact, and which simply aren't used verymuch in the grand scheme of things. Is that a sign of failure? Well perhaps, but it can also be seen as a sign of strength, on two separate counts.

It's no small thing to admit your mistakes and know when to call it a day rather than continuing to push something that simply isn't going anywhere. More than that though if you look at where reall successful companies do best it's in focusing on one or at most a few things and really doing those things incredibly well. Companies tend to start to flounder when they have their fingers in too many pies and get outside of their core business. A slimmed down Google focusing on fewer projects that it can do better sounds like a more promising venture than a Google that thinks it can be all things to all people.

Video: Samsung Pokes Fun At Apple In New Galaxy S II Ad    [ 23-11-2011 19:31 ]

Samsung are having a spot of fun at Apple's expense with their latest ad for the Galaxy S II. Hardly surprising given that there is no love lost between the two companies, but perhaps a little so considering the iPhone is made up of a good dose of Samsung manufactured components. Anyway the advert plays on the whole 'Apple customers are deluded mindless slaves to Apple' idea and it actually does it with a bit of aplomb. Samsung have managed to work in some wonderful little digs at Apple and the iPhone and the ad, on the whole, comes across as being quite witty. Check it out for yourself below:

RIM Finally Shows Its PlayBook Email App    [ 23-11-2011 19:25 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BlackBerry Cool     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

RIM has finally showcased its PlayBook email, contacts and calendar apps. There are no videos of the apps yet, but BlackBerry Cool have posted up some screenshots, which I have re-posted below.

Now let me just say that I don't care about these apps. Biased much? Well yes, but then again most people won't care about these apps. BlackBerry Cool heaps praise on the apps and that's fair enough, maybe they are genuinely good apps. That doesn't change the fact that almost nobody is going to care. Why is that?

Well let's remember that the PlayBook hasn't actually been selling terribly well. Sales have been in sharp decline and RIM recently announced a big discount on the device in an effort to drumup some interest in it. Add to that the fact that these apps probably won't appear until at least the end of February next year, and you can see why these apps basically don't matter.

It's great that RIM is finally getting these out the door for those who have bought a PlayBook, but as seems to be the case with RIM lately, it's too little, too late.
