Analysts Predict Disappointing Nokia Windows Phone Sales    [ 24-11-2011 16:37 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Forbes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia has pretty much been pegged as the (last?) great hope for Windows Phone. It's far reaching market power and breadth of its portfolio were seen as being key assets that could potentially turn around Windows Phone's lacklustre sales and make it a viable third option in the smartphone market. According to industry analysts that plan hasn't got off to a very good start ...

Bernstein Research, for example, is estimating that the Lumia 800, which launched just last week, will probably only ship somewhere in the region of 500,000 units before the end of the year. One of Bernstein's analysts, Pierre Ferragu, is estimating that the 'buzz level' surrounding the Lumia 800 is in the same ballpark as that surrounding the nokia N8, which wasn't exactly the year's best selling handset.

Pacific Crest, another research group, is also predicting sales of around half a million by the end of the year. That might be consistent with Bernstein's estimates, but it also represents a rather large downgrade from Pacific Crest's earlier estimate of 2 million units.

If all of this seems a tad negative that's because it is. Ferragu perhaps sums it up best:

With no breakthrough innovation, we believe Nokia's new phones are unlikely to get traction in a highly concentrated high-end.

Second, we don't believe Lumia phones are competitively priced.

Third, we believe in economics of increasing returns for mobile ecosystems and judge rather unlikely that Windows can gain critical mass against Android and iOS.

Fourth, we have seen evidence of lack of traction for the Windows operating system over the last 12 months and challenge the idea that the Nokia brand can make a meaningful difference today.

None of that should sound new to anyone who has been following Windows Phone's progress of course. The platform is in the doldrums and with no clear way out except for Nokia. If Nokia can't turn things around then it's hard to see where else Microsoft can turn to in order to make a success of their platform.

For their part Nokia are said to be reasonably pleased with how their Windows Phone devices are doing so far. Will it be enough to see Windows Phone rise from relative obscurity though?

Apple Launching TV By Summer 2012?    [ 24-11-2011 16:26 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple's long rumoured, and much anticipated, foray into the television market is causing some concern amongst its rivals according to Peter Misek, an analyst at Jeffries & Co. The worry comes from not knowing exactly what it is Apple has in store for its rumoured TV set. In other words they're as much in the dark as the rest of us.

Misek reported in a note to clients that production of Apple's TV would begin in February in Japan at a Sharp manufacturing facility as the device will be using Sharp display panels. A launch date of mid-2012 is being touted by Misek.

Rivals such as Samsung are said to be looking at Google TV as a means of countering Apple, but Google TV hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire so it remains to be seen whether or not it actually takes off in any meaningful way.

Of course this still doesn't tell us what exactly it is Apple will do to set their television apart. One report has suggested the possibility of Siri being used as a means of interaction. It's basically a guess, but perhaps a pretty good one. Siri has so far proved popular on the iPhone 4S and perhaps alongside a conventional remote setup it might give an Apple television set enough leverage to make it stand out from the crowd.

Video: HTC G1 Is Still Alive With Ice Cream Sandwich    [ 24-11-2011 16:23 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: XDA Devs     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The HTC G1 is still very much alive and kicking ... well perhaps not kicking, but it is alive with Ice Cream Sandwich. jcarzz1 of XDA-devs posted up a video of his device sporting Google's latest version of Android. Remember that this is a device that wasn't supposed to see any action past Android 1.5! The device is working, albeit slowly, and there is no WiFi, Bluetooth, or rotation, but it is running at least. Check it out below:
