It's the end of an era as Adobe has confirmed that it will no longer be developing its Flash Player for mobile devices. Instead Adobe will be focusing on HTML5 and Adobe-AIR native apps for the major mobile platforms. Adobe's VP Danny Winokur explained the decision:
Our future work with Flash onmobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash develoeprs to package native apps with Adobe-AIR for all major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

DigiTimes are running a report stating that Apple thinks demand for the iPhone 4S will decline going into the crucial 4th quarter period. The report cites an anonymous source as saying that Apple has reduced its parts orders with its suppliers as a result of this forecast. Apparently the orders have been moved forward, taking capacity away from the 4th quarter holiday season and placing it in the 1st quarter of next year.
The fourth quarter has been widely regarded a potential gold mine for Apple with some analysts predicting record iPhone sales. Some have vene speculated that Apple could shift as many as 40 million iPhones in the 4th quarter alone. Of course if the DigiTimes report is to be believed that would seem unlikely. There is another possibility though; Apple may have ordered more initial production deliberately and is simply cutting back to a normal level. Apple may have wanted to ensure that it could meet initial demand for the iPhone 4S and when that died down to more normal levels production might have been cut back as a result.

Online spending on music is climbing according to figures from Gartner. Projections for 2011 show that consumers will spend around $6.3 billion on music purchases, which is up from the $5.9 billion spent last year. The growth in music spending is being attributed to cosnumers utilising ever more connected devices, from smartphones to tablets to the trusty old PC. It's also telling that music subscription services are seeing an increase in spending too with subscription rates predicted to make up $532.1 million of total music spending this year. That figure will grow even bigger, to $808 million, next year according to Gartner.
It's welcome news for the music industry no doubt, even as they continue to tell everyone that piracy is destroying their industry. Many commentators have been pointing out for years that it is the music industry's lack of innovation, conservative nature, and essentially fear of change that is ultimately holding them back and these figures would seem to support that view. When these new technologies are properly utilised there is a demand for paid for legal music services.
However, the picture is a little more complicated than that because growth rates are slowing in the more developed markets of North America and Western Europe along with Asia/Pacific and Japan. Future growth is likely to be highest in developing markets such as the Middle East and Latin America. There is plenty of opportunity for growth in these markets if the music industry would stop clinging to outdated models and get with the times.
