Brian White, an analayst with Ticonderoga Securities, reported on Monday this week that pre-orders for Apple's iPhone 4S sold out in Hong Kong within just 10 minutes. It's a pretty impressive feat and underscores the popularity the handset is currently enjoying, having seen huge first weekend sales in initial markets and with analysts predicting a record number of iPhone sales in the holiday season this December.
The fact that the pre-orders sold out within literally minutes in Hong Kong underlines how important the 'Greater China' market is becoming for Apple. In the last quarter Apple derived $4.5 billion in revenue from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which represents a massive 270% increase over the same quarter in 2010. Back then the wider Chinese market accounted for just 2% of Apple's sales in that quarter, whilst this year the figure had leapt to 16%.

Gingerbread is now the dominant Android version, making up 44.4% of Android handsets. It's actually not all that far ahead of Froyo, which continues to hold onto a 40% share. Gingerbread has been the Android version of choice on a number of new handsets so this has probably helped to boost its numbers, but even so Froyo doesn't appear to be diminishing quickly. Honeycomb manages to rustle up a 2% share of Android devices. hardly surprising given that it is a tablet only version. All in all there isn't too much fragmentation in Android at the moment compared with some points in the past and hopefully Android continues moving in that direction. However, with Amazon releasing its own unique Android tablets and Ice Cream Sandwich up and coming a little mess in the landscape might be just around the corner.
