Eric Schmidt: Google Won't Give Moto Preferential Treatment    [ 08-11-2011 19:56 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Eric Schmidt has been reassuring Google's Android partners that the company's recent acquisition of Motorola will not mean that Motorola receives preferential treatment from Google. Speaking to reporters on a trip to South Korea the executive chairman of Google told them:

In general, with all of our partners, we told them that the Motorola deal will close and we will run it sufficiently and indepenently, that it will not violate the openness of Android. We're not going to change in any material way the way we operate.

Partners such as Samsung, HTC et al may be worried that Google's $12.5 billion Motorola acquisition would see Motorola privy to flagship devices or early releases of Android software. Schmidt's comments to reassure them aren't actually all that surprising though because Google's main concern in buying Motorola is access to Motorola's patent portfolio. That's a treasure trove of tech patents that Google will want to get its hands on as Apple and Microsoft launch patent lawsuits in courts around the world against Android manufacturers, often with much success.

iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Sell Out In 10 Minutes In Hong Kong    [ 08-11-2011 19:44 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Brian White, an analayst with Ticonderoga Securities, reported on Monday this week that pre-orders for Apple's iPhone 4S sold out in Hong Kong within just 10 minutes. It's a pretty impressive feat and underscores the popularity the handset is currently enjoying, having seen huge first weekend sales in initial markets and with analysts predicting a record number of iPhone sales in the holiday season this December.

The fact that the pre-orders sold out within literally minutes in Hong Kong underlines how important the 'Greater China' market is becoming for Apple. In the last quarter Apple derived $4.5 billion in revenue from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which represents a massive 270% increase over the same quarter in 2010. Back then the wider Chinese market accounted for just 2% of Apple's sales in that quarter, whilst this year the figure had leapt to 16%.

4/10 Android Handsets Running Gingerbread    [ 08-11-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Phone Arena     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Gingerbread is now the dominant Android version, making up 44.4% of Android handsets. It's actually not all that far ahead of Froyo, which continues to hold onto a 40% share. Gingerbread has been the Android version of choice on a number of new handsets so this has probably helped to boost its numbers, but even so Froyo doesn't appear to be diminishing quickly. Honeycomb manages to rustle up a 2% share of Android devices. hardly surprising given that it is a tablet only version. All in all there isn't too much fragmentation in Android at the moment compared with some points in the past and hopefully Android continues moving in that direction. However, with Amazon releasing its own unique Android tablets and Ice Cream Sandwich up and coming a little mess in the landscape might be just around the corner.
