Xperia Nozomi Spotted    [ 07-11-2011 17:40 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Just Another Mobile Phone Blog     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A couple of pictures of Sony Ericsson's forthcoming Xperia Nozomi for you here. For a pleasant change the pictures are in focus so you can actually make some details out. The handset features a front facing camera for video calls, as you can see in the pictures, and reports suggest it will be sporting dual-core 1.5 Ghz chip. The screen looks to be a 4.3 inch affair so it's not a petite handset we're looking at here. Date, price etc are all still up in the air, meaning that we don't know yet.

Motorola Secures German Injunction Against Apple    [ 07-11-2011 17:27 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: FOSS Patents     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Where Samsung has struggled in vain Motorola has triumphed ... they've won an injunction against Apple, and in Germany of all places. It was there that Apple succeeded in winning its own injunction against Samsung earlier this year. Motorola's victory means Apple is barred from selling any new goods that infringe upon two of Motorola's patents as well as mandating that Motorola is owed damages.

Now before people read too much into this ruling it is actually something of a hollow victory for Motorola. The injunction applied to Apple Inc, not Apple's local subsidiary Apple Germany. Apple Inc doesn't actually sell anything in Germany, rather that is handled by their local subsidiary. So in effect the local division can keep selling products. However, because the ruling affects new goods Apple Inc apparently can't deliver new products to its German division.

No doubt Apple will be looking to appeal, but for the moment Motorola, and by extension Android, has at last scored a victory against Apple, even if that victory isn't a total one.

Microsoft Loosens Windows Phone Hardware Restrictions    [ 07-11-2011 16:35 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Mobile Digest     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft have been tinkering with their minimum requirements for Windows Phone, lowering the specification threshold manufacturers need to meet. Gone is the mandate for a camera, with both rear and front facing cameras now being listed as 'optional' hardware components, which is also the category the gyro and compass falls under.

So why the change? Surely it doesn't make sense to dumb down handsets? Well the change has probably come about due in no small part to Nokia. The Finnish manufacturer is set to release lower specced Windows Phone handsets, which will allow them to target different demographics as well as developing markets where price is more of an issue.

Some things remain constant though as Microsoft are still stipulating that the handsets contain the familiar three buttons of start, search, and back; a WVGA display and capacitive multi-touch display along with a minimum of 256 MB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory.
