RIM Stock Down 68% This Year    [ 04-11-2011 16:39 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: LA Times     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

RIM has sunk to a new low, literally, in that the company's stock fell below 'book value'. What that means is that investors believe the company isn't worth as much as the assests it controls. It's all part of a downward spiral for RIM, which has seen its value drop by an incredible 68% this year. RIM hasn't been helped this year by a three day global service outage, poor sales of its debut tablet, the PlayBook, and handsets that have received a lukewarm reception for the most part, and which many consider to be well behind the current market curve.

All this has led to some speculation that RIM might be vulnerable to a takeover. Some shareholders have actually suggested that this might be a good move for the increasingly struggling manufacturer. Calls for change at the top and in RIM's corporate structure are growing increasingly loud, but so far there are no outward signs that real change is coming. By the time it does there may not be much of value left to change.

iPhone 4S Number 1 Smartphone In The U.S.    [ 04-11-2011 12:17 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Recent figures from Nielsen showed that iOS was essentially lat in the third quarter, neither gaining nor losing marketshare. That doesn't look too good; even though it didn't decline, it didn't advance either. However, according to Canaccord Genuity the iPhone 4S was the bestselling smartphone on three of America's largest networks in October and remember that it was actually only available to buy for half of that month. The iPhone 4 was also making a strong showing.

What all this adds up to is a big fourth quarter boost for Apple and iOS. Mike Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord explained "Our October checks indicated the iPhone 4S was the top selling model at AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon with the iPhone 4, now $100, a top 3 selling model at each of those channels". He also predicted that December would see a big surge in iPhone sales, possibly breaking previous records.

Bing App Released For Android & iOS, But Not Windows Phone    [ 04-11-2011 11:36 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Bing     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft have announced their Bing for Mobile app for Android, iOS and Windows Pho ...er no, actually not Windows Phone. The app will be available for Windows Phone's two biggest competitors first and then Windows Phone and BlackBerry at some point in the future according to a Microsoft blog post. If this sound slike a bizzare decision it's actually not. For starters Android and iOS control much more of the market than Windows Phone does so it makes sense to release the app on the platforms where it will have most impact first. Secondly Bing is already integrated with Windows Phone so Microsoft isn't losing much here by not having it ready for its own platform from the get go. Instead Microsoft will no doubt be hoping to get people on those other platforms using Bing who might be using the standard Google setup Android and iOS devices come with.
