Gesture based controls independent of a handset aren't anything new. Indeed they've been around for a while now, but Patrick Baudisch and his team at the Hasso-Plattner Institute have come up with a system that doesn't require learning a new dictionary of gestures, just good old fashioned human muscle memory.
The system works using a depth camera to record a user's gestures on the palm of his hand. Those gestures are then translated into commands to be carried out on an iPhone. Interestingly the team discovered that most iPhone users were innately aware of the position of about two thirds of the apps on their handset without having to look at the device. That obviously lends itself very well to being able to gesture control those apps without having to look at the device.
The current system is at the testing stage so there is bulky equipment involved, but as ever with technology the hope is that smaller versions can be produced that could be wearable. For now you can check out the system in the video below:

Steve Ballmer has been saying things today ...interesting thigs about Windows Phone as it happens. For starters he's been talking about the enxt major Windows Phone update 'Mango' saying that it will bring a whopping 500 new features to the platform. Most of those features are no doubt going to be minor things that most people may not are about, but 500 is an impressively large figure nonetheless and there is almost certainly going to be some major new functionality in there too.
Ballmer also mentioned that tomorrow will see the unveiling of the OEMs and networks that will be onboard with Windows Phone. That has sparked speculation that new hardware will be on show tomorrow with the current thinking being that nine new devices will appear. Not that they will be ready for sale tomorrow or anything, but it's always nice to see new hardware.
The developer tools for Mango should be out and about for devs to use by the end of the week.
You can see some of Ballmer's talk in the video below although the quality is unfortunately a little poor.
