Microsoft announced some new hardware partners for Windows Phone today and whilst the addition of new names was of interest it was the names not present that seemed to arouse the most curiosity.
Added to Microsoft's partner list were Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE so expect to see handsets from those chaps soon(ish), but neither Nokia nor Dell were present on the list. Now in Nokia's case that isn't really strange for two reasons. The first being that Nokia isn't ready to release a Windows Phone handset yet and the second is that Nokia seems to have positioned itself as more than just another name on a power point slide. It's almost as if they are a premium partner and don't need to have their involvement explicitly stated.
However, what was surprising was that there was no mention of Dell. Now Dell were one of the original launch partners for Microsoft when they first released Windows Phone late last year so what is going on? Well the truth of the matter is rather boring I'm afraid; Microsoft simply didn't mention them because Dell are not one of the "... partners ready to go ..." i.e. they don't have a Mango handset lined up for launch.

Engadget managed to grab some hands-on time with Microsoft's Mango update for Windows Phone and took a peek at augmented reality apps. The apps include a History Channel app and a Weather Channel app. Mango adds augmented reality support for devs so expect to see more augmented reality apps appearing for the platform.

Mango, the refreshing ne wupdate for Windows Phone, will be the Windows Phone version of choice for Nokia when they finally release their first handset to use the platform. The confirmation came in a statement from Nokia:
Today Microsoft has announced the key new ingredients of the latest 'Mango' release of the Windows Phone operating system. This is the software that will be used on the first Nokia with Windows Phone device, and so should be of keen interest to Nokia-watchers everywhere.
Note the use of the singular tense in the statement. Essentially it looks as though Nokia will start the ball rolling with a single Windows Phone device and take it from there. Probably a sensible move in all honesty.
Also notice the phrase being used here 'Nokia with Windows Phone'. That will probably be the brand used by Nokia when advertising this device and it points to a desire for Nokia to keep their name at the forefront instead of being 'just another' partner using the platform. It also gives a little insight into how Nokia sees itself i.e. not just another manufacturer and certainly not just a generic name using a common mobile platform.
For their part Microsoft confirmed in their keynote today that they do indeed have some Nokia handsets running Windows Phone in the lab being tested.
