Google Expected To Serve IceCream At I/O    [ 03-05-2011 18:52 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google annual I/O event kicks off next week and most, if not all, eyes will be focused on Android. The reason being of course that Google are expected to unveil the next iteration of their platform, widely expected to be IceCream Sandwich. It's not just that IceCream will be a new version of Android, which is enough to excite people anyway, but it's how IceCream will relate to Gingerbread and Honeycomb that has many people interested.

Honeycomb of course has been centred around tablet devices whilst Gingerbread has been focused on smartphones. The expectation is that IceCream will somehow combine the two straegies into one and so end the two pronged Android approach that Google has been running with of late. That's important given that fragmentation and over complexity in versions have been some of the longest running detractions in Android's case.

Amazon Tablet Going Into Production    [ 03-05-2011 16:40 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

DigiTimes are reporting that Amazon have filed requests with manufacturers to begin production of their first tablet device. Taiwan's Quanta Computing is said to have gotten the contract, which is good for somewhere between 700,000 - 800,000 units. The tablet itelf is expected to go on sale later in the year, which ties in with previous rumblings that placed the launch window some time in the summer months, with late summer looking the likeliest. The tablet will almost certainly be Android based, no doubt a great tie in with Amazon's new Amazon Appstore as well as their music and ebook offerrings.

iPhone 5 To Come In Two Models?    [ 03-05-2011 10:02 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: iPhone Download Blog     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Most of the rumours surrounding the iPhone 5 have centred around the launch time and the fact that Apple seems to be breaking with the established tradition of a summer launch. Time for another rumour then and this time it has been suggested that Apple might launch two new iPhones rather than just one. The iPhone Download Blog is reporting that Apple may be launching a 'standard' and 'pro' version of the iPhone 5.

The rumour originates from an insider apparently who says that Apple are ordering components of varying quality. Now all the components being ordered wouldn't realistically fit inside an iPhone according to the rumour hence the speculation that they are meant for different handsets. The standard version would presumably have the lower quality components whilst the pro version would feature the better ones.

Of course it could be that the different components are actually meant for completely different devices, a new iPod Touch, for example. That actually seems more likely given that Apple haven't shown any sign in the past of offerring a two tier approach to the iPhone and instead have used the preceeding model as the 'budget' option. Then again they do look to be breaking with tradition with the release date ...
