It's a big day for RIM as BlackBerry World gets underway and they have been showing off the latest version of their OS, BlackBerry 7 OS. They have also taken the lid off the Bold 9930 and 9900. I say 'new', but of course rumours and sightings have been rampant so some may not feel totally surprised here. Indeed it's no shock to discover that the device is powered by a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon and that there is a 2.8 inch VGA touchscreen. That last specification just doesn't sit well in the modern world of large screened smartphones does it? Anyway there is a 5 MP camera on the back and 8 GB of internal storage. There's also NFC support thrown in for good measure.
The 9900 supports HSPA+ and the 9930 world version of the handset adds in CDMA support for anyone still using that. Other connectivity options are as you would expect e.g. WiFi b/g/n/ and of course Bluetooth.

Well the cat is out of the bag and so is BlackBerry 7, the latest iteration of RIM's smartphone OS. So what's the deal with the new version? For starters RIM are saying it will be both easier to use and faster than previous incarnations of BlackBerry OS. There is also inbuilt support for voice-activated searches and RIm are also saying that the browser has been enhanced.
The browser was one of the big draws to BlackBerry for many people back in the day, but in recent years it has felt perhaps a little behind the times compared with browsers appearing on other platforms. With BlackBerry 7 we will see the addition of a JIT Java compiler as well as HTML 5 video support.
Now for the bad news ... because these things are never perfect right? There is no legacy support. Yes you read that correctly. RIM have confirmed that older RIM devices, even those running the latest versions of BlackBerry OS 6 will not be receiving an update to this new improved version 7. Maybe some enterprising hacker will find a way, but it won't be comiing from RIM.
