Leaked Roadmap: Tango In Q2 & Apollo In Q4    [ 29-12-2011 17:34 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WMPoweruser     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft are set to release their Tango update for Windows Phone pretty soon, Q2 in fact, if a leaked document is to be believed. The document is described as a roadmap by WMPoweruser and sets out the release cycle for Windows Phone updates for the year ahead. First out of the stable should be the afore mentioned Tango and going by the document it is set for lower end handsets, The actual wording used is 'Proucts with the best prices'. Even so there has been some chatter that Nokia's Lumia 900 will be making use of Tango.

Later in 2012, some time in Q4, we can expect to see Apollo, which is set to be Microsoft's next major platform update after Mango. There is already talk that Apollo will bring with it a new GPS positioning framework as well as integrated support for NFC.

Rumour: Apple Launching 2 New iPads In 2012?    [ 29-12-2011 17:22 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Rumours of Apple's intention to release a new slimmed down (feature wise) version of the iPad in 2012 abound of late. Despite strong skepticism from many and analysts telling us flat out that it is very unlikely the rumours continue to persist. The latest comes from DigiTimes and suggests that Appleis gearing up two iPads for early next year.

The two new devices will take the form of a high-end version and a mid-range version. The iPad 2 will supposedly be kept around as an entry level model, presumably with a price reduction to match. The two new models will both feature 9.7 inch displays with 2048x1536 resolution and will be dual-LED backlit. There is unfortunately no mention made of what exactly would separate the high-end and mid-range models, but it would be a safe bet to imagine some reduction in features.

It is interesting to see this rumour abandon the idea of an iPad with a screen smaller than the familiar 9.7 inches and to be fair it was that smaller screen size that led to much of the skepticism. Even if this is sounding more plausible we won't have too much longer to wait to find out the truth as the rumour points to January as the date of the unveiling.

Christmas Sees BIG Numbers For Tech    [ 29-12-2011 16:30 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR, All About Windows Phone, Amazon, Flurry, Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Christmas season is always good for selling products, especially tech products as customers are more willing to pony up the dough for high priced electronics at this time of year. Bumper numbers look to be the name of the day all round this year as Android, iOS and Amazon's Kindle all did some very healthy business.

First up is Amazon, which sold "millions of Kindle Fires and millions of Kindle eReaders". No hard figures were announced except to say that Amazon was shifting in excess of 1 million Kindle devices every week during December. That gives us a ballpark figure of more than 4 million in total. It is also worth mentioning that Amazon's number one and number four best selling ebooks were from independent authors using its Kindle Direct Publishing service.

Windows Phone was also doing well during the festive season as it crossed the 50,000 app barrier. That came less than a month after it was announced that Windows Phone had notched up 40,000 apps. That indicates that the pace of growth is picking up and that would seem to be a pretty safe assumption. According to All About Windows Phone there were 17,000 apps submitted in the last 90 days and they came from a total of 13,000 different publishers. That's an average of 265 new apps each and every day. Of course Windows Phone is still a good way from ousting either Android or iOS from atop the Christmas tree, but RIM is looking rather precarious so it probably won't be long before Windows Phone sails past.

The biggest numbers come fromAndroid and iOS as you probably guessed by now. Andy Rubin has been manning Twitter again to provide the numbers for Android and impressive numbers they are too. For the period covering Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone Google activated a whopping 3.7 million new devices. Flurry is reporting that the combined activations for both Android and iOS on Christmas Day topped 6.8 million. Some fuzzy maths provides an estimate of around 3.1 million iOS devices then.
