Analyst: No 7-inch iPad In 2012    [ 23-12-2011 20:37 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The current round of 'iPad nano' rumours was dealt a blow today with an investors note from Brian Blair, an analyst at Wedge Partners. In the note Blair dismisses the rumours and says that Apple has no such plans to release that sort of device in the predicted latter half of 2012. He is confident that Apple will stay the course with the 9.7 inch affair they've been offerring so far. He did say that Apple have been testing 7 inch displays for a year or so, but with Steve Jobs vocal opposition to that size format in the past he doesn't see it as something likely for the near the future.

It's worth pointing out at this stage that Blair successfully predicted the iPhone 4S with the A5 processor and was one of the handful of analysts who didn't buy into the iPhone 5 rumour. That gives him a bit of credibility with this sort of thing, but it should also be noted that even where Apple has taken a stand against something it has, on occassion, changed its mind later on. Native app support on the iPhone would be one example.

Blair went on to suggest that Apple would use its iPhone strategy with the iPad. Rather than completely replacing the iPad 2 with an iPad 3 successor, he belives that the iPad 2would continue to be offered, but at a lower price point

Infographic: Tech In 60 Seconds    [ 23-12-2011 20:07 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: GO-Globe     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I love statistics and such and this infographic from web design firm GO-Globe is a real hoot. It displays various statistics from all across the world of technology in terms of what happens in 60 seconds. From how many iPones Apple sold (925 iPhone 4S' per minute) to how many people watched porn (2 million a minute).

The statistics are pretty interesting when they're put into the context of a single minute and highlight the sort of volumes dealt with on the internet. For example, RIM sells 103 BlackBerrys a minute whilst Amazon shofts 18 Kindle Fires in the same time period. Eighty one iPads are sold every 60 seconds and 232 computers are infected with malware. Check out the graphic below for all the juicy facts.

RIM Hit With Lawsuit Over BBM Trademark    [ 23-12-2011 19:48 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: The Globe and Mail     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's finally Friday, the end of another long week in the tech world, but of course that doesn't mean that the tech news stops and that in turn means that the bad news for RIM doesn't stop. Yes folks it is time for the daily dose of bad news for BlackBerry. Today's drama revolves around a lawsuit filed against RIM in its native Canada over its use of the BBM name.

RIM uses BBM to denote its BlackBerry messaging service, but RIM wasn't the first to use it. That honour goes to a radio station in Toronto called BBM Canada, which has been using it for around 60 years or so. Now at first glance this might look like some upstart radio station trying to cash in on a big company like RIM's success. However, BBM Canada's CEO, Jim MacLeod, has apparently been trying to come to an agreement with RIM over the naming issue for some time now. In fact BBM Canada even offered to rebrand their own company if RIM would pay for it.

RIM is no stranger to trademark infringement. They had to rebrand BBX as BlackBerry 10 after a similar lawsuit. The curious thing with the BBM trademark though is that RIM seemingly filed for ownership of the trademark back in February 2010, but of course it wasn't able to register it. That didn't stop RIM from using that trademark though. That seems completely bizarre, but with a lawsuit ahead we'll see for how much longer RIM can continue to use BBM.
