Sony Ericsson has been busy at the U.S.patent and trademark office this festive season. Just before Christmas, on 13th December, they registered the trademark 'Xperia Ion' and is to be used in connection with 'mobile phones'. It could be another handset Sony Ericsson is looking to bring Stateside along with the currently rumoured LT28at, which is said to be one of the company's premier products next year. There is also Nozomi, currently undergoing field testing around the world, which again may be coming to the United States if some ofthe current web chatter is to be belived. Whether Ion turns out to be low or high-end a clutch of new handsets possibly destined for American shores might signal that Sony, the new masters at Sony Ericsson, are looking to make more of a dent in a market that has traditionally been lukewarm to their charms.

ComScore's last figures for 2011 might very well be any of their other figures for 2011 as they give us a view of a smartphone market that has changed little over the past quarter. The figures for the U.S. market show both Android and iOS slightly up from the last time ComScore released results, with both of those platforms taking the lion share of the smartphone market. Android is still in the number one spot with 46.9%of the market and iOS is still in second place with 28.7%.
RIM continues its fall from grace, losing 3.1% (the same number of percentage points Android picked up). RIM's share of the American market now stands at just 16.6% with no obvious sign of a turnaround on the horizon. Microsoft fared little better, losing 0.5% to bring its total to 5.2%. Symbian is all but gone of course, now residing at 1.5%.
