Video: Nokia 500 Aims Low    [ 01-08-2011 20:37 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nokia     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Whilst all eyes are watching for Nokia's high-end Windows Phone debut the Nokia 500 is looking to shore up the company's floundering performance by targeting the lower end of the market. The 500 is priced at just 150 euros so it definitely affordable, but for such a cheap handset it's packing in a lot of firepower.

For example, there's the 1 GHz processor running the show, a 5 MP camera, a 3.2 inch 640x360 touchscreen, 2 GB of storage and HSPA support. Those aren't bad specs for a phone that costs so little you have to admit. On the face of it this little sweetheart should be a sure fire winner with kids and those looking for a cheap smartphone. Well ... I haven't mentioned the OS yet, but you can probably guess what's coming ...

... yes I'm afraid it is running Symbian. Why is that a bad thing? Well for starters Symbian is half dead. I know I know, many of you love Symbian, but let's be serious guys, with Nokia throwing its weight behind Windows Phone Symbian isn't going anywhere. Problem two is that Symbian just isn't a draw for any one; customers want Android, iOS or even Windows Phone. All of this isn't to say that the 500 can't be a success, but I'm looking forward to the day Nokia gets this hardware, with this price point, running Wndows Phone.

As for the 500, expect it to be available by the end of the year.

Foxconn Replacing Workers With Robots    [ 01-08-2011 18:38 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Xinuah Net     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Foxconn isn't exactly the first name that springs to mind when you think of great employee relations, and is if to cement that reputation the company is planning on replacing a part of its workforce with robots. To add insult to injury the news was apparently delivered by Hon Hai (the company that owns Foxconn)  chairman Terry Gou at an employee dance. That sounds like a really classy move.

Foxconn currently employees around 1.2 million people whilst its robotic workforce totals a rather meagre 10,000 by comparison. However, by next year the number of robots will have increased to around 300,000 and by 2014 that figure is expected to have risen to a cool million. What isn't as clear is how many of Foxconn's human workforce are going to loose their jobs in favour of its robotic workforce.
