Google Buys 1,000 Patents Despite Distaste For Patent Lawsuits    [ 29-07-2011 20:41 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: SEO by the Sea     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google has, in recent times, been vocal on its distaste for the seemingly endless patent conflicts which abound in the tech industry, specifically the smartphone scene at the moment. Of course Google's Android platform is the subject of various lawsuits brought by Apple against manufacturers producing Android handsets so you might expect Google to react that way. Indeed Eric Schmidt himself is on the record as saying that Android's competitors are unable to effectively compete and thus turn to lawsuits.

It's not just Eric Schmidt though; Kent Walker, Google's general counsel, is quoted as saying that "The tech industry has a significant problem. Software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation". That seems like fair comment and backs up Eric Schmidt's stance. The thing is though Walker made those comments just two weeks before Google went on a patent shopping spree.

Google purchased over a thousand patents from IBM, which cover a wide range of different intellectual property. Everything from fabrication and memory architecture to chips to servers and routers. Why are Google interested in buying uch patets if they dislike the patent wars? Well they aren't stupid. Publicly Google may rail against the current practice of patent lawsuits, but privately they know that to best combat it they need a war chest of their own patents.

Video: Mango Twitter Integration    [ 29-07-2011 19:16 ]

The latest build of the developer edition of the Mango update for Windows Phone now includes Twitter integration. WinRumours got their hands on a copy and have made a nice little video so you can see how the Twitter integration is rolling. Looking at the video the first thing that struck me was how easy the setup process looked so kudos there. Make sure you also check out how it integrates with the People and Me hubs on Windows Phone.

Apple Has More Cash Than The USA    [ 29-07-2011 15:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BBC     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As a measure of success it makes for a great headline and not many companies can say the same, but Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States of America. The latest figures from the U.S Treasury show that America has an operating cash balance of $73.7 billion. Apple on the other hand has cash reserves of $76.4 billion.

Currently the American government is spending $200 billion more than it can afford every month. Apple's financial results show that it is actually making money rather than living beyond its means. That has resulted in some calling for Apple to actually start spending some of that amassed cash with a possible Hulu purchase seemingly on the cards. It's a huge war chest for Apple to be able to react to market changes as well as to shape them. Other possible Apple acquisitions have included Netflix and Barnes and Noble.

Of course the United States does actually bring in more money than Apple each year with a GDP of $14.78 trillion, making it the richest country in the world. The EU, although not a country, is more wealthy than the United States with a GDP of $16.282 trillion.
