Google Snaps Up PushLife ... One More Step Towards A Music Service    [ 11-04-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

An Android music service is along held dream of many, especially since the teasing ways of Google back at I/Olast year. Anyway with a view to a music service in mind along comes the news that Google have snapped up Canadian company PushLife. PushLife just so happened to be working on their very own music app for both Android and BlackBerry.

PushLife features such goodness as one click music purchasing; the ability to browse through stored music both locally on your smartphone and via the cloud on your home computer and automatic syncing of playlists with the likes of iTunes, etc. I shouldn't need to mention that it also sports Facebook and Twitter integration since just about everything from fridges to pacemakers seem to feature those two social networks these days.

Even though Google still haven't gotten their music service up and running yet you can still see what PushLife can do in this demo video:

Video: Nokia X7 Demoed    [ 11-04-2011 19:18 ]

The X7 has been getting shown off in a promo video released by British network 3. The video, originally uploaded by the network to YouTube, was quickly taken down, but of thankfully someone managed to save it for your viewing pleasure. What's especially nice about the video is that it gives us a fairly decent look at the handset's UI. Take a gander for yourself:

RIM Doesn't Get Why People Are Hating On them    [ 11-04-2011 19:03 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: NYT     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Let's face facts here the BlackBerry has an image problem. I'm not saying they aren't good devices or that they don't have their fans because they do, but in recent years they have tended to be viewed as ... how to put it ... out of touch with the times? Invariably RIM has seen its products compared with the likes of the iPhone and Android smartphones and more often than not the conclusion people draw is that the BlackBerry isn't as cool, isn't as smart and isn't as desireable as other smartphones.

So what does RIM's man at the top have to say about this? Well in his usual style of completely missing the point Mike Lazaridis gave some commentary on it to the New York Times. I'll let you read through his comments first before we get into them.

Why is it that people don't appreciate our profits? Why is it that people don't appreciate our growth? Why is it that people don't appreciate the fact that we spent the last four years going global? Why is it that people don't appreciate that we have 500 carriers in 170 countries with products in almost 30 languages?

It's an interesting quote for two main reasons: i) it completely misses the point and ii) it offers no solution to the problem. By missing the point what I mean is that whilst Lazaridis focuses on how well RIM is doing as a company customers are increasingly choosing other smartphone platforms. Customers tend not to choose their smartphone based upon how well a company's stock price is doing or how many agreements it has with networks around the world. That's the point here, RIM can be doing wonderfully in terms of the numbers, growth, etc, but in terms of mindshare it's not winning the battle at the moment.

The mobile space is incredibly fast paced and to be perfectly blunt a company is only as good as their last product. Harsh yes, but it's true. Nobody cares if RIM has products in 30 languages because most people don't need a product that comes in 30 languages. Most people don't give a rat's ass whether a company has spent the last four years 'going global' because as long as it is available where they live it doesn't matter to them. I could go on and on. The bottom line though is that BlackBerry has an image problem right now and that is something that customers do care about.
