Xperia arc, Play & Neo Production Impacted By Japanese Earthquake    [ 08-04-2011 20:31 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami have obviously had a big impact upon the electronics amrket given Japan's prominent posiiton in producing components for many consumer electronics products. One company affected by this disruption in production is Sony Ericsson who are saying that supplies of the new Xperia arc and Xperia Play handset will initially be limited. Once production returns to normal levels in Japan we can of course expect supplies to increase.

The Sony Ericsson Neo has also been affected with its launch having to be put back until sometime in early Q3 of this year. What this means for consumers with regards to all of these handsets is that those looking to buy one had either better be quick off the mrk or take advantage of any pre-order deals that come up.

Sony Ericsson Italy put out a statement via Facebook about the situation. The translated statement is included below:

Hello everyone, today we received an official update on the launch of Xperia Neo. As you know, the recent disaster happened in Japan is directly involved, both from an emotional point of view and economically.

So far we have not released official communications because we were still assessing the total damage suffered.

Our supply chain is reorganizing in particular as regards the sourcing of components, and the first direct consequence is the rescheduled launch of Xperia Neo, now scheduled for July.

Fortunately Xperia Xperia Arc and Play have not been delayed.

We hope to have your continued understanding in this situation and are confident that we will update you on any further change.

Symbian Isn't Open Source    [ 08-04-2011 18:42 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: PhoneScoop     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There's been a lot of attention on Android's commitment to open source lately with Google saying that they are very much commited to keeping it open. Not so Nokia with Symbian who recently clarified their position on the open nature of Symbian. Essentially it comes down to Symbian having been an open source platform in days gone by, but that no longer holds true.

Symbian is still under license to developers and manufacturers who make services and hardware for the platform, but they won't be able to contribute back to the source code. Describing the arrangement a Nokia spokesperson explained:

The Nokia Symbian License is an alternative license which provides an [sic] access to Nokia's additional Symbian development for parties which collaborate with Nokia on the Symbian platform.
