Video: Cyanogen Replicates Desire Z Quick Boot    [ 28-09-2010 17:27 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Phandroid     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the, if not the, most impressive things about HTC's recently announced Desire Z was the incredibly fast boot up sequence. You pretty much pressed the on button and the phone was ready to use. Well the chaps behind CyanogenMod have replicated the feature and it should be making an appearance in CM 6.1.

Cyanogen hasn't quite managed to get the boot sequence as fast as HTC did on the Desire Z, but it's not far off and perhaps there will be some tweaking before it goes live. The ability to boot very quickly that we see with the Desire Z and here with Cyanogen is achieved by having the device save everything in RAM as the device enters what is more akin to a sleep mode. Thus it can boot up seemingly quickly with all its data ready to go.

Toshiba Prepping Its Own Win Phone 7 Handset?    [ 28-09-2010 17:22 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Toshiba may be the latest manufacturer to have thrown its hat into the Windows Phone 7 ring after a filing with the GCF (Global Certification Forum) mentioned a certain Toshiba TG03. Now there had been a TG03 from Toshiba earlier in the year, which was taken to be a Windows Mobile handset, but it never actually appeared. The thinking therefore is that it was scrapped in favour of going with the Win Phone 7 rather than the older Windows Mobile and thus this new appearance of the TG03 is in fact the Win Phone 7 version.

Of course one has to remember that Toshiba is not a named launch partner for Windows Phone 7 so this could all just be pie in the sky. Having said that Toshiba could still release a Win Phone 7 handset soon after the platform becomes official as Acer is planning to do (Acer isn't a named launch partner either). In fact being slightly 'behind the curve' here might actually be a good move as it would give them time to fine tune their handset once the initial reaction to Win Phone 7 has been assessed.

Rumour: Amazon Working On A Tablet Device?    [ 28-09-2010 17:06 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: TechCrunch     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Just yesterday we were posting about the possibility of Amazon releasing their own app store for Android and now today TechCrunch are following that up with a rumour that Amazon may be about to launch their own tablet device too. Everyone and their uncle seems to be working on a tablet device these days, but TechCrunch seemed reasonably confident that the source who gave them the tip was genuine. There wasn't much else said about it really, just that the source had also provided them with the tip off about Amazon's supposed Android app store and that said source had been right with some other stuff and thus TechCrunch was positively predispossessed towards him/her.

If Amazon does indeed pony up a tablet device beyond the Kindle then one imagines that it would be based on Android, which would certainly be a smart move if they are planning on their own Android app store.

Sony Ericsson Announces LiveView Remote Control For Android Devices    [ 28-09-2010 16:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: SE-NSE     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Sony Ericsson have announced a new Bluetooth accessory, LiveView, which essentially acts as a remote control for your smartphone. The iPod Nanoesque device can display texts, status updates and information from other applications. The device has two buttons at the top and four soft keys around the 128x128 1.3" screen and it's these buttons that you use to control the device.

The device comes with a wrist strap to turn it into a sort of fancy watch, but you can clip it onto other stuff, like your clothes say. You will note in the video below that an X10 is used to pair up with the device, but this X10 appears to be running Eclair (Android 2.1) as this device will only work with Android devices running Android 2.0 or higher.
