Amazon Launching Their Own Android App Store?    [ 27-09-2010 19:46 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TechCrunch     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nothing beats a good internet rumour and the best one today is undoutedly the speculation mounting that Amazon may be preparing to launch its own app store for Android. The rumours originate from Amazon having contacted various developers about a new opportunity, but more details were only available once the dev had signed a NDA.

Techcrunch notes that a discussion on Listware is apparently centred on the proposal with one commenting that it appears to be "... more restrictive than Android Market". There is also some chatter about Amazon's payments system having a wider scope than Google's own payment system. Granted that this is circumstantial, but it is tantalising nonetheless.

There is also some speculation as to whether this is a solo effort by Amazon or whether Google might be in on it too. Amazon and Google have previously worked together on such projects as having Amazon's MP3 Store pre-installed on Android. Whatever the modus operandi the idea of an Amazon app store is both exciting in the sense of the new possibilities it might offer, and at the same time possibly harmful to Android given the already valid concerns many have over fragmentation.

HP Exec: Tablet Market Will Be Worth $40 Billion    [ 27-09-2010 19:44 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

HP are being very bullish about the nascent tablet market, believing it to be worth some $40 billion over the next few years. The figure comes from Todd Bradley, the Executive VP in charge of Personal Systems Group at HP. It's perhaps not that unsurprising a figure given how wll Apple's iPad has been received and the column inches devoted to upcoming devices like HP/Palm's own rumoured tablet device a well as the Blackberry tablet device that was just announced today.

He went onto say that the acquisition of Palm has given HP a unified strategy when it comes to interfaces for both tablet and phone devices. Of course the proof is in the pudding there so hopefully it won't be too long before we see either, or both, from HP/Palm. Mr Bradley is also predicting that Palm will manage to shift 15 million webOS powered printers next year and that the smartphone market is worth $100 billion. Maybe he just likes using big numbers?

Video: iStreamer Keeps You Updated In Auto-Scrolling Fun    [ 27-09-2010 19:30 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: CrunchGear     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Individual iPad apps aren't normally something we cover in any great detail, except for when they a) are amazing, b) look amazing or c) both. This particular app definitely falls into the second category and possibly the third depending on how into social media you are. Called 'iStreamer' the idea is pretty simple, it shows updates on a timeline. It presents it in a very attractive shell though with the updates  scrolling across your screen.

It can display tweets and RSS feeds amongst various other updates and you can add keywords to the timeline so that when someone tweets about 'hot Swedish bikini babes' (the first thing that came to mind) it will display updates relevant to that search term. Take a look at the CrunchGear video below to see it in action. It will be $4 when released, which seems a bit steep in our opinion, but there are plans afoot for a lite version, which should hopefully be free.

Video: MIUI ROM    [ 27-09-2010 17:51 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Customised ROMs for Android are ten a penny these days so you could be forgiven for becoming a tad blase when a new one appears. However, the MIUI ROM is a little different, not least of all for the fact that it looks pretty damn awesome. It's based upon Froyo and at first glance looks like some sort of mashup between Android and iOS.

The ROM  looks to have been built from the ground up and the customisation is very far reaching with everything from the lock screen to the app drawer having been modified, indeed there is no app drawer! It was developed by Chinese devs and is mostly in Chinese at the moment so despite it being availble for the Nexus One, Desire and EVO 4G you might not get much use form it if you don't speak Chinese. For those who don't you can check out the video below whilst you brush up on your Mandarin, if the ROM doesn't get you excited the rather too excitable soundtrack probably will.

RIM Introduces Tablet Device: 'PlayBook'    [ 27-09-2010 15:26 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The tablet market got a little more crowded, and a lot more exciting, today as RIM unveiled its tablet device after months of speculation. The device will be called the PlayBook, defying all previous attempts at guessing its name and it's packing a fair old punch beneath the hood. Specs include a dual-core 1 GHz chip and RIM seem to be keen to position it not just to professionals, but also to gamers.

Mike Lazaridis called it 'the first professional tablet', an obvious dig at Apple's seemingly more frivolous iPad, but at the same time RIM are saying "This is going to be an incredible gaming platfom for publishers and the players." If it can fulfill both criteria then this could be a real winner.

One possible drawback for some is the lack of 3G connectivity, but RIM are promising a 3G version (and even a 4G version) in the future.

  • 7-inch LCD, 1024 x 600, WSVGA, capacitive touch screen with full multi-touch and gesture support
  • BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing
  • 1 GHz dual-core processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Dual HD cameras (3 MP front facing, 5 MP rear facing), supports 1080p HD video recording
  • Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV
  • Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA
  • HDMI video output
  • Wi-Fi - 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Connectors: microHDMI, microUSB, charging contacts
  • Open, flexible application platform with support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java
  • 5.1"x7.6"x0.4" (130mm x 193mm x 10mm)Weighs less than a pound (approximately 0.9 lb or 400g)
