LG have signed a deal with NVIDIA to use their Tegra 2 chips in forthcoming smartphones that should be available later this year. The Tegra 2 powered smartphones will be part of the Optimus range of handsets and should hit stores sometime in Q4, we're guessing late Q4. In terms of the end user this means we will see the first handsets to utilise dual-core processors, which will, as you would expect, see performance increases.
LG are saying users should see web browsing speeds roughly double and gaming could be as much as five times faster than on current smartphones running with 1 GHz Snapdragons. Graphics should look better and 1080p video should process faster too. On the subject of gaming LG are saying they will be able to offer a 'console quality' experience. That's a pretty tall order, but then again with these new chips they just might pull it off.
Arguably the most important benefit of these new chips is also one of its least glamorous ... improved battery life. LG are saying that the new dual-cores should see handsets increase their battery performance, which is of coursse very welcome in today's world of 1 day (or less) battery life.

They say 3 is the magic number, but for Samsung it seems the magic number is in fact 10 million. That was how many Galaxy S devices the South Korean firm said it wanted to sell globally and it's the exact same number of Galaxy Tab tablets they say they want to shift too. Samsung are saying the tablet should retail for around the $200-$300 mark although one has already popped up for sale in Germany at closer to 700 euros. At any rate it's an ambitious goal seeing as Samsung are up against stiff competition in the form of Apple's iPad, but the lower price tag will likely swing many customers. Of course it doesn't hurt Samsung's chances any to have gotten into bed with the likes of Vodafone to help push the device.

Samsung are to take steps to try and alleviate the global shortage of Super AMOLED screens by building a ew production facility near Seoul. Currently Samsung has the capacity to produce around 3 million units per month, the the new plant should see that increase by a factor of ten to 30 million units per month. The move is necessitated by the chronic shortage of displays that has affected a number of manufacturers and led them to using alternative Super LD screens from Sony to make up the shortfall.
Samsung themselves have been affected as they haven't been giving their own products priority over their competitors'. In an email to the Dow Jones Lee Woo-Jong, vice president of marketing at Samsung, explained the situation "We've put in a great deal of effort to move up mass production" and noted that Samsung too were feeling the effects of the shortage.
The new plant will cost $2.1 billion, but with manufacturers going to rival Sony for their displays and the appetite for smartphones seemingly insatiable it looks to be money well spent.
