Samsung Announcing New Android Device 8th November    [ 25-10-2010 17:59 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A heads up that Samsung are planning on announcing a new Android powered device come 8th November. Press invitations have been going out for the event, but as too what will be announced it's still a bit of a mystery. Some are wondering of it could possibly be a re-hashing of an existing handset, maybe a European handset destined for American shores? Still others are getting their hopes up that perhaps it might be the first handset to run Android 2.3, which is not all that far fetched given that a gingerbread man has recently appeared on Google's front lawn.

Looks like we'll have to wait two weeks to find out ...

Android Passes The 100k App Barrier    [ 25-10-2010 17:40 ]

Android has finally passed the 100,000 app milestone! It's still some way behind Apple's App Store, which has around 300,000 apps, but Android's Market has been gaining ground fast, a reflection of the overall growth of the platform itself, which has seen it projected to be the number one mobile OS in the world by 2014.

Of course big numbers make for great headlines for the companies involved, but the reality on the ground with these app stores is often that many of the apps they contain are, to be perfectly blunt, totally crap. There are only so many fart apps you need. At any rate it's an important achievement for Android, making it only the second mobile OS to pass this particular milestone, although Google have yet to make it official, instead opting to confirm it through their AndroidDev Twitter feed.

WSJ Mobile OS Poll ... Apple Tanking    [ 25-10-2010 17:39 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Android Central     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Wall Street Journal has been running a poll on its website asking the public what they think the best mobile operating system is. Granted that such polls are unscientific, but it's interesting nonetheless, especially when you see the results of this particular poll.

As the poll stands at the time of writing 27,527 votes have been cast and the clear front runners are Android and Microsoft with 38.4% and 42.1% respectively. What is most surprising, however, is how far back iOS is, just 11.4% of votes. The rest of the options are hardly worth mentioning, polling barely above 3% for the most part.

Apart from the fact that Apple's iOS seems to have utterly failed to win any traction in this poll, something very interesting is going on. Just yesterday the poll gave Android a massive lead over everything else, including Microsoft, which had just 3.3% of the votes. So how come Microsoft has shot up so much in a day? The obvious answer to that question would be that someone has gamed the vote and that the votes for Microsoft are not really valid. Of course we have no way to prove that.

However, what we can do is look at the poll as it stood yesterday and we see quite a different picture. Microsoft has crumbled into joint 4th place with Palm and Android is by far the clear leader. Of particular note, however, is that whether it is today or yesterday iOS, for all its claims of grabbing 'mindshare', doesn't seem to have grabbed much here.

Gingerbread Man Appears At Googleplex ... Next Android Iteration A Week Away?    [ 25-10-2010 17:36 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

You know the next iteration of Android can't be far off when the giant desserts begin appearing outside the Googleplex. To that end a giant gingerbread man has been drafted in to stand guard outside the Google HQ. Speculation is that Gingerbread will be released sometime within the next week or two.
