Windows Phone 7 is arguably the biggest thing to happen to the mobile industry since the launch of Android, but even though it has received a largely warm reception and positive reviews that doesn't mean that it will automatically be successful. Indeed yesterday's launch in the UK was something of a letdown for many if anecdotal evidence is anything to go by.
Microsoft themselves have acknowledged the mountain they have to climb with CEO Steve Ballmer saying "We have a lot of work to do to get back into the game." It's a frank and fair assessment of Microsoft's prospects in that is recognises just how deep the pit is in which Microsoft finds itself, but also holds out hope that it can be a serious contender again.
Windows Mobile ended with version 6.5 and by that stage in the proceedings Microsoft was an archaic throwback to a different age of the mobile industry. Enter Windows Phone 7 and suddenly Microsoft has something to offer consumers again. Ballmer himself is said to had said he wishes Win Phone 7 could have been released last year, but even so it does still have a fighting chance if Microsoft plays its cards right. Most consumers around the world are still using non-smartphones and even within the smartphone market many consumers are always ready to give something new a shot.
It's far too early to say how things will play out for Windows Phone 7, but they have everything to play for.

Speculation has been running rampant over comments made by Yoshihisa Ishida, head of Sony's TV division, to the effect that they're looking to use Android in more devices, the comments reading:
The obvious jump in logic here are Android powered tablets and media players. Of course that is very much speculation, but given that Sony's joint venture in the mobile business, Sony Ericsson, is aiming to be the biggest supplier of Android handsets in the world it isn't that far a leap of the imagination to see Sony themselves jumping on the tablet bandwagon. Indeed it seems almost incredulous that Sony won't have some representation in the burgeoning tablet market at some point so perhaps the real question is whether it will be a Sony effort or a Sony Ericsson badged product?
Sony Ericsson already have Mediascape and Timescape overlays for their Android devices and whilst the UI layers have received something of a mixed reception perhaps they might translate better to a device with a bigger screen? Certainly Timescape would look pretty snazzy on something with a 7 or 10 inch display.
At any rate it's all pie in the sky at the moment, but what we can be sure of is that we'll be seeing a lot more of the little robot that could from Japan's finest.
