Froyo Coming to Galaxy S 'Early November'    [ 21-10-2010 19:18 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the requirements of owning a Samsung Galaxy S is apparently a healthy dose of patience given that the much anticipated Android 2.2 upgrade has been knocked back until November. The timing was anounced by Samsungs UK Twitter feed and promises UK Galaxy S owners the update in 'early November', so probably two or three weeks away yet. The tweet went on to say that 'all operator versions' would then be avilable towards the end of November. Granted that this tweet is from Samsung's British twitter feed, but it wouldn't be surprising if it were indicative of the timeline for network branded handsets from other countries.

UK Win Phone 7 Launch A Damp Squib?    [ 21-10-2010 19:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile, Pocket-lint, et al     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Reports are starting to appear that paint a rather pathetic picture of today's Windows Phone 7 launch in the UK. Various sources have recounted that information on handsets, pricing and availability has been at best sketchy and at worst non-existent, whilst anecdotal evidence points to a trickle of people 'queuing' for the handsets.

Pocket-lint, in their coverage of the story, popped along to a local Orange shop to see how the launch was going there and were greeted by a queue of two people as the shop opened at 7am. To be fair one of those people had been waiting since 5:45am, but two hardly spells out success. Pocket-lint went on to describe how the shop was stocked with staff on-hand to demo the new handsets to the non-existent customers.

Beyond Orange's launch the rest of the UK mobile industry seemed to be in a state of confusion over the launch. Anecdotal evidence from a string of retailers including Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U gave an impression of there being little to no stock of the handsets until at least the weekend and of the staff not having been given any information on prices or exact launch dates.

Whilst all of this is anecdotal it isn't indicative of a well rehearsed, polished and expertly executed launch for the biggest thing to happen to the mobile industry since the launch of Android three years ago. Granted that this is 'early doors' and that momentum may be building, but Microsoft shouldn't be patting itself on the back over what increasingly seems to be a bit of a shambles in the UK.

Winamp Comes To Android    [ 21-10-2010 18:55 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Many of you may be too young to remember Winamp's glory days, hell some of you may be too young to remember Winamp at all, but the veteran of the desktop PC has now made the transition to Android. Back in the early days of the web e.g. before the first dotcom boom Winamp was the music player of choice and perhaps it will be again?

The Android version is available right now in the Market and works on versions 2.1 onwards. The app comes with some pretty nice features, such as Last.fm integration and a syncing mode with its desktop counterpart that allows you to manage your music library either via USB or WiFi.

You can download it using the QR code below:

Analyst Predicts Doom & Gloom For Motorola    [ 21-10-2010 18:52 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Barrons via IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With speculation increasing over when, and not if, Verizon will launch a CDMA version of the iPhone in the U.S. analysts have been taking a look at how such a launch would impact upon Verizon's current smartphone goldenboy, Motorola. Verizon have been pushing Motorola's handsets to the top of their smartphone line-up and with good cause, products like the DROID have taken the U.S. market by storm.

One analyst though is predicting that Motorola will be in for a rough ride when Verizon finaly does get its hands on the iPhone. Ashok Kumar is forecasting Motorola to miss estimates for handset sales in Q3 of this year, not a wholly unfeasible prospect given the shortage of displays and lacklustre performance in China, both factors that will hinder its ability to meet market expectations. Kumar also predicts a Q4 failure to meet targets and for the poor performance to continue into next year.

On the face of it a Verizon iPhone would appear to spell certain doom for Motorola, which has counted Verizon amongst its biggest succes stories of late. However, Kumar's analysis is arguably too parochial in that it doesn't take into account the fact that Android, as a platform overall, is growing at a breakneck pace and that Motorola isn't beholden to Verizon, or even the U.S. market. Android continues to appeal to customers on networks that do offer the iPhone right now so prophecies of doom and gloom ahead for Motorola may be somewhat premature.
