Samsung have announced a new touchscreen handset, the Champ, but it isn't quite their ordinary fare as it's designed for developing markets. That mission brief is nowhere more apparent than in the screen, which come sin at 2.4" and uses resistive technology. The Champ is to be positioned as an affordable full touchscreen option and will be aimed primarily at the youth market in the countries where it launches. As such expect to see it released in a variety of colours such as deep black, espresso brown, sweet pink and chic white. In terms of features it's actually pretty reasonable for a handset that is designed to be cheap and cheerful:
Not exactly setting the world alight we know, but for what may be someone's first touchscreen handset, especially a young kid, it contains all the basics. It also features Samsung's popular TouchWiz interface, which lets users stup multiple homescreens and it will also support installable Java apps from Samsung's app market, which comes pre-installed in the handset.

Facebook will launch a new version of their site, called o.facebook.com, aimed at developing countries. The main feature of the new version is that it will be completely free to access so users won't incur any data charges. Optimised for mobile devices the new site promises to be quick and responsive whilst still providing users with Facebook's key features. Note the phrase 'key features' though because things like photos and other multimedia won't be supported and if you do decide to leave the new version to watch a video that someone has posted, for example, then you will be charged your network's normal data rate. So far Facebook has managed to get some 50 or so networks onboard and the service will initially launch in 45 countries around the world. Interestingly enough, even though the service is apparently aimed at developing countries, it will also be launching in mature markets like the UK, Belgium, Denmark and other European countries. Presumably Facebook will also be looking to target people in richer countries who may not have the means to pay for a regular data subscription on their phone e.g. children.

Gizmodo have been giving the latest beta of iPhone OS 4 the once over and a few more changes have cropped up, nothing too major, well at least if you're not American, but we'll get to that in a moment. The Homescreen has seen a tweak to how the standard apps are presented with the calculator, calendar, compass and voice memo apps now residing within a folder named 'Utilities'. Presumably this will be reversible should one wish to have them back on the Homescreen itself. There are also more wallpapers to choose from although the original ones ares till present too. One last minor feature that's been added is the ability to view the Camera Roll in landscape mode. That last one may surprise some, in that they may not have known that that wasn't already a supported feature.
So those are the minor change sin this release, but there is one big change if you live in the U.S. and use AT&T ... tethering! Within the network settings there is now the option to turn on tethering. This has been an option available to many international users for some time now so no great excitement for those of us not in the U.S., but many American iPhone users will no doubt be pleased that they will finally be able to get to use a feature promised a year ago.

Palm might have hit the rails and had itself bougth by HP, but that doesn't mean it isn't still releasing handets to networks around the world. The UK is set to receive the Pre and Pixi Plus handsets at the end of this month, 28th May to be exact. The network of choice? O2. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the launch, given the 'success' of the Palm Pre in the UK, and state of Palm itself, is that O2'spricing list isn't exactly wallet friendly. You would have thought they would want to drum up some interest by keeping the prices as low as possible. The cheapest contract they're offerring for these handsets is £25/month, which gives you unlimited texts, but a paltry 100 minutes and the phones cost moeny up front too! The full list of tariffs is below:
