No Skype for Windows Phone 7    [ 12-05-2010 21:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Windows Phone 7 suffered something of a setback today as Skype announced that it will not be developing a version of its popular software for Microsoft's upcoming platform. Dan Neary, Skyp's VP in the Asia Pacific region, gave a speech in Sydney during which he affirmed that Skype would be focusing on the iPhone, iPad and Android. Some might wonder why it's a big deal, after all it's just one company, it's not as if there aren't other VoIP options available. The thing is though that Microsoft themselves have announced that Windows Phone 7 will be shipping without some features e.g. copy/paste. This is supposed to be Microsoft's big comeback in the mobile space and offer a challenge to Android, the iPhone and anyone else interested for that matter. If it looks like its missing popular features and/or support from popular vendors then it might come out of the starting blocks looking more like a cart horse than a thoroughbred.

Froyo to Support USB Tethering & Hotspot Creation    [ 12-05-2010 20:25 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Boy Genius Report     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Froyo is shaping up to be onehell of an upgrade for Android users. Not only is it looking delieciously sweet in the performance stakes, it will also be coming with USB tethering support. That's not all though because it will also come with WiFi hotspot creation built in! Both are very exciting features (especially that hotspot creation support), but it is, as always, worth taking a moment to consider the network dimension. Some networks around the world aren't keen on USB tethering and may not be keen on hotspot creation either. Even if they do allow it, there may be hefty tethering tariffs. Sorry to pour some cold water on things here, but it is worth pointing out.

Droid Eris Getting 2.1 Update, Can the Hero Be Far Behind?    [ 12-05-2010 13:21 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket-Lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Good news for Droid Eris owners today as Verizon confirms that the handset will be getting an update to Android 2.1. The Eris is Verizon's version of the HTC Hero so there is some speculation that the Hero may be next in line for an update, something many of its owners will no doubt be hoping for. As for Eris owners they can expect the update to come through OTA within the next 24 hours although in some cases it might be up to two weeks as Verizon confirmed themselves on their Twitter feed:

"The roll out process begins between not & 24 hours & can take up to 2 weeks for all the phones to receive the notification."

The wider Hero community has had a bit of a wait for the update, HTC not helping matters by seemingly dragging its feet and giving conflicting messages at times.

Another Lost iPhone Turns Up    [ 12-05-2010 11:27 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

For a company that is supposedly paranoid about security Apple sure seem to be letting these new iPhones go for a wander on a regular basis. Another lost iPhone has turned up, this time in the slightly more exotic locale of Vietnam. There are a couple of interesting points to note about this partiular iPhone when compared with the one Gizmodo got their hands on, the first of which is that this one boots up. When booted it shows some sort of console named 'Inferno'. Also on display here is the processor used for the next gen iPhone, which seems to be a reduced A4 chip. Gizmodo enhanced the picture and made out the following markings:

  • 339S0084
  • K4X2G643GE
  • YN6024Z3
  • APL0398

This model would appear to be the final release, or very near to the final release. It's more polished than the one Gizmodo had, notably the screws at the bottom of the Gizmodo handset are absent here and the back of the handset has a finished look/feel to it and interestingly enough shows '16 GB'. If this is the finished modle it might suggest that a memory increase isn't on the cards for the iPhone as so many had assumed. Compare the two lost iPhones below, the Gizmodo one being on the left.

For now though you can take a peek at the video of the handste being given the once over.

Opera 10 Mobile Comes to the N900    [ 12-05-2010 11:22 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Daily Mobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

First it was Android and now it's Opera Mobile 10 running on the N900. Maemo can already boast a number of options when it comes to web browsers and now it can add Opera Mobile 10, perhaps the granddaddy of all mobile browsers, to the list. There is one big caveat to mention here though, this port isn't the result of Opera thowing all its weight behind the project rather it is the product of a small team of Opera's developers who gave up their free time to work on it. As Opera themselves are quick to note:

"It’s worth pointing out that this is not an officially-supported release. As such, it has not undergone our usual quality assurance processes, and at times may not feel as polished or complete as an official release. This also means that there may never be a “final” release of Opera Mobile 10 for Maemo devices, since it’s just that much more fun to add shiny new features rather than fixing boring old bugs".

That sounds both ominous and a little exciting. Nevertheless it is worth rememering that bugs encountered may not be fixed and there are already a few to look out for:

  • Adobe Flash and other plugins are not supported.
  • Screen tearing may be visible when panning, especially in portrait mode. We expect to fix this in a future update.
  • The built-in on-screen keyboard is not supported. Use the physical keyboard or the on screen keyboard included with Opera Mobile.
  • There is no power management support. In practice this means that if you open a page with animations and leave Opera running, you will soon be using a payphone. Power is drained even when Opera is running in the background and/or the screen is turned off.
  • If you set Opera as the default browser, for example by installing the Browser Switchboard, an extra empty tab will get opened every time you open a link from an external application.
If you fancy giving it a bash you can download it here.

Video: Android Eclair Running on the N900    [ 12-05-2010 11:13 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Android seems to be running on just about everything these days, the iPhone having gotten a fair bit of treatmentfrom the droid community in recent weeks, and now it's the turn of the N900 (again). This isn't the first time someone has gotten Android to run on the N900 you see, but, and this is the important bit, it is the most determined effort to get it running so that the average Joe can use it without too much hassle. So far what's been done is to get Eclair up and running with the onscreen keyboard and the touchscreen being supported for input. There is still some way to go though before this will acually be usable in every day situations, for one thing there needs to be a working radio stack, but there seems to be a fair bit of enthusiasm for the project so we can probably expectt o see more soon and of course you can always become one of those 'Fantastic Men and Their Android Machines' by heading on over and contributing to the discussion.

Sharp Unveils Mobile 3D HD Camera Module    [ 12-05-2010 10:24 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The '3D revolution' marches relentlessly on it seems as Sharp announce a 3D camera module for mobile phones. The module, an industry first, as Sharp as keen to point out in their press release, will record3D images in HD at 720p. Samples are to be produced in July with full scale mass production looking set to swing into action later this year. The module isn't just for mobile phones we should point out, it will probably see the light of day (awful joke I know) in digi camera too. Worth mentioning too is a line at the bottom of Sharp's press release stating that they are working on 3D displays too, including small/medium displays, which are presumably intended for mobile phones, and larg 3D LCD's, presumably not for mobile phones. The first 3D enabled mobiles can't be far off it seems and neither therefore can ana rmy of budding amateur James Camerons.
