New Symbian^3 Reference Library Released    [ 06-05-2010 21:54 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Symbian log     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Symbian have let loose a new version of the Symbian^3 reference library for developers to work with. There is more content available in the library than previous versions and thee have been the obligatory bug fixes of course. That's not to say it's all running peachy, there are still some bugs, which have bene documented on their wiki page. The previous release was late last year, but whilst this is a new version it is based upon that older version so, as Symbian said themselves "The library will look quite familiar in places ...". The update has come about, according to Symbian, because of the work Nokia have been putting into the paltform over the past several months: "Nokia have been hard at work converting the content to a standard format (more of that in a future blog post), contributing it to us under EPL and providing an open source tool chain to allow us to combine the content with API reference built from doxygen comments in code. The resulting fruits of their labours is the library you see today, which has also had significant input from Symbian’s web development and delivery teams".

You can download the library here and make sure you report any bugs you find here.

Bada SDK (Beta) Goes Public    [ 06-05-2010 20:52 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung have taken the wrapper off the SDK for their OS Bada and released it into the wild for developers to get their hand son. It is in beta version we should note (version 1.0.0b2), however, it's packed full of all the usual tools devs need to get started making apps e.g. APIs, simulator, debugger, etc. The SDK was originally launched back in January, but that release was restricted to approved Samsung partners. You can download the SDK yourself and get cracking on some apps, but you will need to be signed up to Samsung's Bada Developers programme to do so. The actual handsets that will use Bada are expected to start making an appearance in Europe sometime this month, handsets like the Wave S8500, so Samsung will no doubt be hoping that devs get cracking and start churning out some apps.

Take a look at Bada in action:

iPhoneHD to Feature HD Video Capture?    [ 06-05-2010 14:42 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: MacRumours     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some more Apple/iPhonenew today in the shape of a tasty little rumour that the forthcoming iPhone HD (or whatever it's called) will feature HD video recording at 720p. The rumour apparently originated in the fact that some code was found pointing to high resolution video capture in the latest iPhone 4 SDK.

AVCaptureSessionPreset640x480
AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720

Of course it's been speculated for a while now that the enxt iPhone will be packing a 5 MP camera and even the much talked about 'iPhone HD' name itself is apparently a reference to its multimedia capabilities. It would also make good sense in terms of the competition in the market, which is increasingly going down the HD route, both for playback and capture. It would seem odd for Apple to ignore such a prominent area of growth in mobile phone features. Well we'll know soon enough, the next iPhone is scheduled to be unveiled (officially) in mid-June at Apple's WDC event.

Apple Patenting Cardiac Sensors in iPhones    [ 06-05-2010 12:10 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple are apparently keen on embedding cardiac sensors within the case of an iPhone. Such sensors would be able to monitor things like your heart rythmn when the phone was held in the hand and they could even be used to identify a particular person. There have been attempts at integrating biometric sensors into phone sbefore, but usally it's not executed very well and/or requires the user to go through some hoopes to use it. All in all biometric sensors haven't been well received so far. What Apple seem to be talking baout here is a seamless experience that simply requires the user to pick up the phone as normal and it will identify the user as either its owner or someone else. Granted this is sitting at the patent stage, which isn't the same as saying this thing will be in the next iPhone, but even so it does sound pretty sweet.

  Windows Phone 7: Early App Examples    [ 06-05-2010 11:52 ]

Author: Murtazin Eldar   Source: PhoneArena     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Here we have a rather nice little gallery of early Windows Phone 7 apps. It's just pictures at this sage ufortunately, but it does give some taste of how they'll look and what sort of apps are being worked on by developers. None of these apps are really in the category of 'WOW!', but there's a place for the simpler stuff too. Microsoft appears to have learned the lessont hat a good app store is key to ensuring the success of their platform and have invested heavily in making sure they attract devs.
