ITC Confirms It Is Probing Apple Over HTC Patent Infringement    [ 13-06-2010 23:22 ]

Apple's litigation woes are following the old addage of getting worse before getting better it seems as it's confirmed that a U.S. Trade Panel will investigate claims made by HTC that Apple is infringing on its technology. HTC is seeking to win a ban on selling the iPhone, iPod and iPad in the U.S. The International Trade Commission's (ITC) statement was pretty brief and really just confirmed that they would be taking up the case and that it was related to "... certain portable devices and related software." HTC filed the complaint last month and stated that Apple was infringing on five patents it held which related to 'cellphone directory hardware' and 'software and power-management technology in portable devices." As you will no doubt remember Apple had filed their own suit against HTC in Marchso HTC's suit wasn't unexpected, but Apple's suit carried the extra baggage of being seen as a strategic attack against Google, even though Google wasn't actually named in its suit. The ITC does have the power to ban the import of products that infringe on patents and that is exactly what HTC is seeking here since most of Apple's products are made in countries such as China. Of course the way these things play out is that both sides will probably eventually settle the matter before it goes that far, at least that's how it usually works ...
