Chrome to Phone Syncs Browser to Froyo Handset    [ 07-07-2010 16:08 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Android and Me via IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A rather handy new extension for Chrome promises to keep you running with whatever you were doing on your desktop browser when you have to go mobile ... at least if you're running Froyo that is. The extension, called Chrome to Phone, basically syncs your Chrome browser on the desktop to your Froyo powered handset so you can continue your browsing session on the move. It's still early days yet so functionality isn't perhaps what you might expect, or hope for, in that the extension only allows for the syncing of webpages not bookmarks or any other information a la Firefox Sync and Home. As stated you will need a Froyo powered handset to make use of this feature and that means either a Nexus One or a Moto Droid at the moment although, as we have previously reported, HTC should be rolling out Froyo to some of its latest handses within the next month or so. If you do happen to be luck enough to have a Froyo device then just follow Google's uber easy instructions and give it a try for yourself.

  1. Head over to the Google Chrome to Phone Download Site
  2. Download and install the chrometophone-extension-v0.3.crx file (for Google Chrome) or the following Firefoxextension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/161941/
  3. Download and install the chrometophone-android.apk Android application
  4. Launch the Chrome to Phone application from your Android phone and click the Register Device button
  5. Launch the Chrome to Phone Chrome Extension in your Chrome browser and enter your Google username and password
  6. Start sending stuff!

HM the Queen Given Personalised Blackberry    [ 07-07-2010 16:07 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of Canada, was given a personalised Blackberry on a recent tour of RIM's manufacturing facility in Canada. HM the Queen was taking a tour of the facility as part of her Royal Visit to Canada. In what may surprise many Britons and Canadians the Ottawa Citizen said the Royal Family are apparently "... big users and big fans ..." of Blackberry devices. Whether that includes HM the Queen herself or not isn't known, the last confirmed handset HM the Queen was known to use was an old Siemens handset from around 10 years ago. The royal Blackberry is a 9700 model (no early access to forthcoming handsets even for royalty it seems) and has been personalised specifically for Her Majesty with a pre-installed wallpaper showing children from the Queen Elizabeth Public School in Kitchner. The actual tour of the factory was conducted by none other than Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder of the company, and involved HM the Queen having to wear a white smock over her yellow silk dress to prevent electrostatic charges. Whether HM uses the Blackberry or not we'll probably never know, but we can make a safe bet that she won't be giving out her PIN.

Froyo Leaves iOS 4 Trailing In Java Benchmarks    [ 07-07-2010 16:01 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Ars Technica     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The chaps over at Ars Technica have been putting Froyo head to head with iOS 4 in Java script benchmarking tests and the results aren't great for iOS 4. Froyo doesn't so much leave iOS4 in the dust as it leaves it choking and spluttering on the dust. Android received some major performance boosts with Froyo including a high-performance JIT being introduced to the Dalvik runtime environment and browser optimisations. These enhancements really show up here and earn their money. Ars' tests used SunSpider and V8 benchmarks on a Nexus One running Froyo and the end result was that JavaScript execution was around three times faster in Froyo's browser than in previous iterations of Android. Comparing the results with the iPhone 4 Ars found that Froyo was delivering 'significantly faster JavaScript execution', in fact Froyo performed more than three times better in V8 tests and was around twice as fast with SunSpider. Those are pretty big differences as the the graphic below illustrates. The title of fastest mobile browser is most definitely in the Android camp and Apple will really have to up their game if they want to get it back.

Video: 3 New Blackberries Caught On Video    [ 07-07-2010 15:06 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Salomondrin via Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Quite the bevy of Blackberry videos have appeared today, which will be music to the ears to Blackberry fans who might have felt they were drowning in a sea of Android and iPhone news of late. The first video, below, is of the 9800, the slider handset that you may have seen before now in other videos and pictures. It's running OS 6.0 in the video and the specs are said to include a 3.2" 360x480 touchscreen, 3G & EDGE support, WiFi and GPS, and a 5 MP camera with flash.

Moving on we have the 9300, which against you may have spotted doing the rounds on the interwebs and below that is the 9670, again running OS 6.0 just like the 9800. The camera on the 9670 is a 3.2 MP effort here, but reports suggest that this may see a bit of upgrading by the time of release and the handset could ship with a 5 MP module. Other specs include 512 MB of RAM and a hefty, for a Blackberry anyay, 4 GB of storage.

EU May Force Apple to Adopt Flash    [ 07-07-2010 11:42 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Daily Tech     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Steve Jobs looks to be facing possibly his biggest challenge yet over Apple's refusal to allow Flash anywhere near its iOS platform ... the European Union. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes isn't known for being shy when it comes to taking on the world's biggest companies, especially tech companies, just ask Microsoft, and under her guidance the EU is preparing a new intitiative called the Digital Agenda, which may very well have huge ramifications for Apple and other large technology companies. The Digital Agenda essentially makes it easier for a company to be investigated over anti-competitive practices. The section below is the crucial part for Apple:

Since not all pervasive technologies are based on standards the benefits of interoperability risk being lost in such areas. The Commission will examine the feasibility of measures that could lead significant market players to license interoperability information while at the same time promoting innovation and competition.

Before the Digital Agenda anti-competitive investigations centred on companies with dominant market positions, this initiative would change that to companies with a significant market position e.g. Apple. It may result in Apple being forced to allow Flash on their iOS platform amongst other things like allowing 3rd party devices to sync with iTunes e.g. the way Palm tried to do with the Pre. Apple has built a closed eco-sysem for itself that delivers a first rate user experience in terms of interoperability, a situation not totally dissimilar to what Microsoft was trying to do with bundling its own products with its Windows OS, a move that ran fould of the EU's competition commissioner ...
