EU Approves Orange/T-Mobile Merger    [ 22-02-2010 20:20 ]

The proposed merger between Orange and T-Mobile in the UK has been given the go-ahead by the European Commission. However, approval comes with a price, namely that 3 UK gain access to 3000 mast sites to help them expand their 3G coverage. The Office of Fair Trading in the UK had had som qualms over the merger, worrying that it would seriously dampen competition in the British telecommunications industry. Those fears are obviously not shared by the EU, which stipulated the access to more masts for 3 and 25% of the 1800 MHz spectrum to be offered to competitors for use with mobile broadband. The merger thus looks set to go ahead although for the time being customers probably won't see much difference with both brands continuing to be used, at least for the foreseeable future.
