Apple Rumoured To Be Releasing New Improved iPhone 4 This Month    [ 31-08-2010 19:30 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple are perpetually at the epicentre of a vast rumour mill, most of which probably aren't worth the effort they took to type. However, every once in a while there comes a long a rumour so juicy you just have to print it and this is just such a rumour. In a nutshell, and to no one's surprise really, it is being said that Apple plan on releasing a revised version of the iPhone 4 later this year that fixes the antenna problem. Now you may be wondering why this is a big deal, after all it's not surprising that a company would attempt to rectify a problem with one of its products right?

The big issue here though is if this rumour proves true what will happen to the millions of people who have already purchased an iPhone 4 with a faulty antenna? They are being given free cases to shore up the problem at the moment, but will they be offered a replacement handset? That would likely be an enormously expensive undertaking for Apple, but what is the alternative? To tell people who bought the iPhone 4 when it first came out 'this new one has no antenna problem, but tough luck you won't be getting one'? That won't do Apple's brand any favours.

The fix itself is said to be someting along the lines of a coating of some kind or a change in the material. The basic premise of the fix is that it won't hide the antenna to preserve the handset's aesthetics. The mutterings are supported by an exec at one of Mexico's mobile networks who made the claim and pointed towards late September as a possible release date for this new improved iPhone 4. That would certainly tie in nicely with the end of the free bumper offer ...

Video: LG E900 Running With A 1.3 GHz Snapdragon    [ 31-08-2010 19:17 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Android.com.pl via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The fact that LG are going to release one of the first Windows Phone 7 handsets sometime within the next couple of months and that it is to be called the E900 isn't exactly what you would call news anymore. At this stage the interest in the handset is more in seeing more, and clearer pictures, of it as well as getting the lowdown on exactly what sort of specifications it will be bringing to the table.

The chaps at Android.com.pl are doing just that, revealing as they are that it will come packing a mighty Snapdragon under the hood. This is no ordinary Snapdragon though, it will be a 1.3GHz QSD8650A chip instead of the more common 1 GHz efforts we're all so familiar with. The handset will also boast boosted 2D and 3D graphics, GPS, HD video recording and playback as well as support for both UMTS/HSPA and CDMA 3G data connections. The handset is bristling with sensors as well as a mini-USB port and a 3.5mm jack.

All in all it looks to be a pretty decent handset and you can see a bit more of it in the two videos below.

Samsung Releasing A 2nd Bada Handset: The Wave 723    [ 31-08-2010 18:44 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Bada has been a rather lonely club so far with just the Samsung Wave propping up the bar. However, the Wave is set to get a new drinking partner when Samsung release the Wave 723, it's second Bada powered smartphone. Bad being Samsung's own proprietary mobile OS. Don't get too worked up though because the 723 isn't packing in the sort of specifications to light up your eyes. Rather it's a bit more mid-range than the original Wave, for example, the Super AMOLED screen featured in the Wave has been ditched in favour of a 3.2" LCD effort.

The rest of the specs list is pretty much par for the course with few surprises. There is the 'standard' 5 MP camera and of course WiFi support. There is also an auto-scale UI feature for the 723, which hints that the resolution will not be WVGA as was the case with the original Wave.  The auto-scaling would allow devs to convert apps more easily. In a hark back to the Tocco the 723 comes with a leather flip cover, it doesn't add any real functionality, but should offer some protection for the screen at least.

In terms of release Germany will be the first European market to get the 723 sometime this month, but other European countries should see it appear shortly afterwards.

Video: SMS On Windows Phone 7    [ 31-08-2010 17:58 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket Now     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As we get ever closer to the launch of Windows Phone 7 we see more rumours of handsets, videos of them in action, reports of gaming functionality and so on. What we don't get to see a lot of though is the nuts and bolts of the OS itself and how the user will actually ... well use the system. Step forth Pocket Now with a video of the SMS functionality in Windows Phone 7.

The video covers everything from receiving texts whilst the screen is off to receiving them whilst it is on to showing off the threaded messaging feature. It might just be our opinion, but Windows Phone 7 is looking pretty damned nice when it comes to SMS. It's a very clean interface that looks pretty slick and it even manages to make the iOS SMS system look a little out of touch. Enough words though, check out the video below to see for yourself.
