SE UK Confirms X10 Update For September    [ 30-08-2010 18:32 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Beside's HP's execs waving blacked out mystery devices around the big mobile news on Twitter today was Sony Ericsson's confirmation of the X10 Eclair upgrade. Sony Ericsson's official British Twitter feed was spouting out a date of the end of this month for the update. The update to Android 2.1. willa ffect all the handsets in the X10 'family', not just the X10 itself e.g. the X10 MIni and X10 Mini Pro will be receiving it too.

Whether this applies to other markets isn't known yet, but if it isn't a global update date then surely other markets can't be far behind? It's certainly a welcome move for X10 users who have had to trudge along with Android 1.6 for months now. Of course 2.1 is a fine update, but many would still like to see Froyo (Android 2.2) hitting their handsets in the not too distant future.

HP Exec Teases With Mystery Devices    [ 30-08-2010 18:14 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Twitter     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Who would have thought corporate types could be such teases? Phil McKinney, HP's CTO, certainly plays that part when he posts some interesting pictures on Twitter showing him playing with gadgets straight out of HP's R&D labs. Well when we say 'show' what we actually mean is that Mr McKinney can be seen holding something that is blacked out in the picture.

The blacked out devices are tablet sized and phone sized respectively. Oh and there is a blacked out device around his wrist. The former are perhaps not too surprising, an HP tablet running webOS has all but been confirmed and a new handset running webOS wouldn't be a major shock either. Still it's nice to see apparent confirmation of their existence, even if it is in a vague roundabout sort of way. What the wrist device is is open for speculation with a watch obviously being the number one suggestion. Presumably enhanced with Bluetooth, etc. Then again maybe it's something more exotic and futuristic?

Google Snaps Up Mobile Gaming Firm    [ 30-08-2010 17:59 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

An often critiqued area of Android has been its apps, and its games in particular. Not to put too fine a point on it Android doesn't have as good a selection of really top notch titles as Apple's iOS platform does. Well it looks as if Google are taking some formative steps to address this problem with the purchase of SocialDeck.

For those unfamiliar with the company SocialDeck create gaming platforms that work across different mobile OS environments e.g. Android, iOS, Blackberry OS, etc. Of course the mere act of purchasing this company doesn't reveal what Google's plans and vision for gaming on Android will be, but it does hint at better days to come for Android gamers.

The mobile space in general has been hotting up in terms of gaming with iOS now being recognised as a major force in mobile games, so much so that Ninetndo have acknowledged Apple as the 'enemy of the future'. Android has been lagging behind Apple in this regard, but with this recent acquisition and rumours circulating of a Sony Ericsson 'PlayStation Phone' Android does seem to be heading towards a better place in terms of gaming. Indeed Google have gone so far as to hire a 'gaming advocate' and there is talk of Android 3.0 supporting enhanced graphics performance for games.

Of course Google has a huge mountain to climb to catch up with, let alone overtake, Apple in the mobile gaming stakes. Then again at the pace Android is evolving and growing at that may not be a goal that is all that far off.
