'Try Before You Buy' In App Store (Not Really)    [ 06-08-2010 13:15 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple have added a new feature to the App Store, a 'Try Before You Buy' section. That should be good news for those who like the look of an app, but don't want to part with their money on an unknown quantity ... only that isn't how it's going to work, not exactly anyway. The new section isn't so much a 'Try Before You Buy' section as it is a list of apps that have free lite versions. That's great if an app you want does have a trial version as they're now neatly organised for you, but if the app you are interested in doesn't have a trial version then tough, you will just have to pony up the dough as usual if you want to take it for a spin. It's a bit of a shame really beause a genuine trial feature would have added a lot of value to the App Store and perhaps helped to drive sales from wary customers. Android operates a not totally disimilar policy in giving customers 24 hours to return an app if they change their mind. There should be no reason for Apple not to offer its customers something similar.

Symbian One Ups Google: Ships 300k Handsets Per Day    [ 06-08-2010 09:53 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Symbian     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Give a dog a bone and another dog is probably going to want it.That certainly seems to be the case with Symbian who have released some figures that one up yesterday's announcement by Google that Android handsets were shipping some 200,000 units per day. Symbian's figures for Q2 shows that more than 27 million devices were shipped. When that figure is broken down it equates to approximately 300,000 devices per day. Symbian has helpfully broken it down further so they can show off a bit more, namely showboating a figure of 207 devices per minute, or 3/sec.

Symbian comes out with an interesting line in their statement "These figures, released in Canalys’ latest report (www.canalys.com/services/reports/spmt), highlight Symbian’s continued position as the world’s most popular smartphone operating system ..." That is technically true, Symbian is the most popular mobile OS in the world by marketshare.  What they don't mention of course is that the competition is snapping at their heals and that Symbian grew slower than the market overall.
