Video: Blackberry OS 6.0    [ 27-04-2010 18:39 ]

RIM's WES 2010 presentation is in full swing as I type, but for those not in attendance RIM have handily posted up a video of their new Blackberry OS 6.0 on their YouTube channel. The video is a little hard to follow in places given the rather distracting dancing and movement going on in the background, but there are a number of things to keep your eye out for here. Music is organised in a manner reminiscent of cover flow on the iPhone, threaded messaging, Facebook and Twitter. You can check it out for yourself below:

N8 Goes Official    [ 27-04-2010 17:09 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: http://www.engadget.com     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With all the recent flurry of acitivity over the next gen iPhone and various Android handsets, it has been easy to forget that those guys are still bit players compared with the biggest manufacturer in the world, Nokia. So what have Nokia been up to whilst all that has been going? Getting this baby ready for launch by the looks of things. The N8 sports a pretty impressive list of features including 12 MP camera (still not many of those around), 3.5" capacitive touchscreen, 16 GB internal memory, HD video recording and HDMI output and of course it's running Symbian^3.

The user experience looks to be more important than ever for Nokia with the N8 touting the ability to support multiple customizable homescreens that can a la Android support widgets and shortcuts etc. The N8 will come in different colours, rnging from a rathe sickly looking lime green to an eye catching blue to the more standard fare of silver and black. Price wise we'll be looking at 370 euros, which actually isn't too bad at all for a handset with these sort of specs, and the release date is pegged for the end of summer/start of autumn, which isn't too far away.

  • Frequencies: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 2100 /1900
  • Dimensions: 113.5 x 59.1 x 12.9 mm, 135g
  • Screen: 3.5" AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch
  • Memory: 16 GB internal, 256 MB RAM, support for microSD
  • Connectivity: HSPA 7.2/5.76 Mbps, WiFi b/g/n
  • Camera: 12 MP with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash
  • Video: 720p@30fps CPU: 600 MHz

Moto 3D Handset Leaks    [ 27-04-2010 16:12 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A leak from China Mobile has turned up a most interesting find indeed, a Motorola handset with a 3D display. Pocket-lint point to a recent patent application on just such a display and comment that the leaked picture would suggest that development on the product is much closer to a commercial release than the patent might otherwise suggest. The handset itself is a touchscreen effort, but the 3D component of te screen is a flip, which covers the screen to enable 3D viewing. This would obviously indicate that touchscreen input won't be possible in 3D mode, rather the 3D mode would seem to be purely for viewing content. The handset is currently going by the decidedly unsexy monicker of the MT810. 3D is just now taking off in cinemas and TV land, but mobile devices ahve been untouched by the concept until now. It remains to be seen whether this is something that is actually in demand, especially if the 3D component is so obviously 'something extra' as in the case of the flip component here.

Gizmodo Editor's Home Searched by Police in iPhone Case    [ 27-04-2010 15:50 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Techcrunch     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As you will remember we posted yesterday about how Gizmodo faced possible prosecution over its iPhone 4G leak story. Well the latest development is that Jason Chen, Gizmodo's editor, has had his home raided and computers siezed by the police. Police in California obtained a search warrant, which they used to enter Chen's home and removed two servers, four computers and other equipment. The story isn't quite that straightforward though because of a law in California known as the 'Shield Law'. Essentially the Shield Law protects Californian journalists from revealing sources or information they have gathered as part of a report, but which hasn't been published yet. Gizmodo's lawyer's are saying that Chen's home constitutes a newsroom and thus he should be protected by the law. Because of this the investigation has come to a halt whilst the matter is examined. Stephen Wagstaffe, the Chief Deputy District Atoorney for San Mateo County, was keen to stress that no one has actually be charged yet and that it is very much an investigation at this stage.

Update: Yahoo! News is reporting that REACT, the task force that carried out the search on Chen's home, includes Apple on its steering committee. Stephen Wagstaffe commented that Apple have played no part in REACT's involvement with the case and that he wasn't aware that Apple were even affiliated with the committee.
