Android 2.1 for G1 Thanks to Cyanogen    [ 28-04-2010 22:10 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With the bevy of new Android handsets that have appeared over the past year or so it's easy to forget the early birds that were the G1 and myTouch 3G. Whilst the newer handsets have been running with the latest Android builds these two haven't been quite so fortunate, at least until now. CyanogenMod 5.0.7 will bring the accelerated graphics and various other whizz bang stuff from Android 2.1 to the likes of the HTC Dream and Magic. The actual ROM is almost ready according to a tweet from the developer with 'test 1 public beta' hopefully going live sometime today. While you wait take a look at the new build being run on a G1 in the video below:

Microsoft to Profit from Android Sales    [ 28-04-2010 21:57 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft, of all companies, look set to start reaping some financial gain from Android. The Redmond based company has just signed a licensing agreement with HTC over patent use involving Android. Microsoft are saying that Android uses some of their patents and it looks like they have a tight enough case for HTC to have ponied up the dough. Of course neither Microsoft or HTC will want to get into litigation over the matter; HTC are already embroile in patent disputes with other companies and Microsoft won't be keen on suing one of its most important partners. The patent agreement between Microsoft and HTC will quite probably be causing some concern amongst other manufacturers who may soon be looking at paying Microsoft to avoid court cases. Neither HTC or Microsoft are saying exactly which patents are involved, but whatever they may be Microsoft will soon be making a profit off of Android. They say truth is stranger than fiction ...

Apple to Charge $1 Million for iAd Placements    [ 28-04-2010 21:54 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the big announcements at Apple's recent iPad unveiling was the news that they will be offerring up ads through their mobile devices using their new iAds platform. Today Reuters are reporting that Apple may be looking to charge as much as $1 million for the privilige. The Wall Street Journal is citing a source close to iAds as saying that Apple may even charge as much as $10 million to be amongst the first advertisers when the platform goes live. How does this compre with other ad deals on mobile devices? Well the WSJ was informed by ana d executive that similar mobile deals would normally cost around $100,000 - $200,000. The difference is pretty striking. In terms of revenue share Apple would be taking a 40% slice of the action with app developers taking the remaining 60%.

5 Reasons Why Android Might Not Unseat the iPhone    [ 28-04-2010 21:02 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: The Telegraph     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A rather interesting piece from the Telegraph today on why Android might not supplant the iPhone. Cutting through the filler they list five points why the iPhone will ultimately be triumphant as presented by Mark Sigal of O'Reilly. Presented below are the five points they list, remember they're not our five points:

1. Apple’s physical stores are a “superior environment for consumers” and something that Google lacks.
2. Apple’s devices are much more competitively priced these days.
3. The iPhone offers a better ecosystem for developers than the Android does.
4. Adoption begins with consumers these days and filters back to business, rather than the other way round.
5. Apple is single-minded and resilient, Google might not be.

To be fair these are just snippets of the arguments Sigal makes so it's worth actually reading through his article before judging the merit of these points.

iChocolate iPhone iCandy ... Pricey Though    [ 28-04-2010 16:42 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocjet-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ok I know this isn't mobile news strictly speaking, but it was just too delicious a story to pass up (see what I did there?). A French chocolatier, iChocolates (what elese?), has come up with boxes of chocolates that resemble an iPad and an iPhone. The actual chocolates inside the box are made to look like apps as you would see the on the screen of one of the devices. The chocolates come in different flavours and the icons used to make them look like apps are administered using, what the company calls, 'chocographics technology'. For all that they're pretty amazing to look at, and hopefully eat, they don't come cheap ... £30.50/box or around $45. That's before you add on postage and packaging costs. You can order them here, but if it proves too costly for you then just enjoy the eye candy below ...

LG & Samsung in 'More Android for Korea' Push    [ 28-04-2010 16:24 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

South Korea is set to get a hefty injection of Android goodness as the country's two big handset manufacturers get set to release new Android powered devices. Let's take LG first with their Snapdragon handsets, the LG-LU2300 and the LG-SU950. Both handset feature a 3.5" display, 3.5mm jack, DMB mobile telly and are set for release in South Korea sometime around the May/June mark. Meanwhile LG's arch rival Smasung isn't standing still, all set as they are to release the Galaxy A sometime at the end of this month. The Galaxy A packs in a slightly bigger screen than the LG's at 3.7"; features a 5 MP camera, HD video recording a-GPS, but 'only' a 720 MHz processor. The Galaxy A, by the way, will be running Android 2.1, just so you know!

The Samsung is at the top in the pictures below, the LG at the bottom.
