Mozilla to Release iPhone App ... Firefox?    [ 20-10-2009 17:23 ]

Mozilla are all set to release an app in Apple's App Store and tongues are wagging as to what it might be. The most popular theory is of course that it's a mobile version of Firefox, Mozilla's popular web browser. However, there are those who think it might be something else, especially after comments made by Mozilla's CEO, Jon Lily, "Mozilla will release an app to the iPhone app store in the next few weeks. It’ll surprise people." Some are taking that to mean that while people are expecting Firefox it will be something totally different. On the other hand the surprise could be that it's Firefox. Apple is notorious for rejecting apps that duplicate the 'core functionality' of the iPhone and since Firefox would be a direct competitor to their own Safari browser, which comes pre-installed on the iPhone, there's a good argument that it would indeed 'duplicate core functionality'. If it is indeed Firefox then it may mark a sizeable shift in what Apple are prepared to let through.
