TVCatchup Offers Live Telly for iPhone    [ 15-10-2009 20:20 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Watching television on an iPhone isn't exactly new, indeed there are various options available to do it. UK users are particularly blessed given that they have access to the BBC's excellent iPlayer service. Well it could be in for some competition with the launch of TCCatchup. Some of you may remember it from last year when it got into a spot of bother by offering users the ability to record live TV. The British broadcasters weren't too happy at that and TVCatchup was forced to back down (not least because its ISP disconnected it!). Well now they are offering an iPhone ready version of their website at iphone.tvcatchup.com, which allows users to instantly watch live telly, althouhg it should be noted that there is a 1 minute delay in the feed when compared with a television. Annoyingly for non-British users it doesn't work outside the UK just like the BBC iPlayer. Originally the plan was to launch a mobile version of the site, which would have enabled iPhone users to access it before now, but as Flash inclusive mobile browsers have become more prevailent that idea was dropped, unfortunately for iPhone users it meant that they still couldn't access the service. The new iPhone site gets around this by offering playlists to choose programmes from.

Nokia Loses 426 Million Euros in Q3    [ 15-10-2009 17:25 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's not been a good day for Nokia as their quarterly results have been announced and the figures don't look good at all. Probably the biggest news is the 426 million euro loss the company saw. Compare this with this time last year and Nokia made 1.469 billion euros. In terms of sales net sales reached 9.81 billion euros, down 1% from Q2 2009 and down 19.8% from this time last year. 108.5 million handsets were shipped, up 5% from Q2 2009, but down 8% from this time last year. Smartphones accounted for 16.4 million of those handsets, up from the 15.5 million shipped in Q3 2008, but down from Q2 2009 when it shipped 16.9 million smartphones. Putting those smartphones figures into context Nokia estimates that they currently have an approximately 35% share of the smartphone market; the same as this time last year, but down from 41% in Q2 2009. European markets seem to have been a saving grace for Nokia's smartphone sales this quarter with European markets seeing a 16.3% rise in smartphone shipments, whereas America saw a 3.1% decline. The average selling price of Nokia handsets was 62 euros and they've managed to maintain a 38% share of the global handset market.
