Blackberry Dakota To Use Liquid Lens    [ 05-10-2009 17:00 ]

Some of you may have already heard snippets about the Blackberry Dakota also known as the Magnum. So far it's been rumoured that Dakota will be Blackberry's first hybrid product, basically a 'mash-up' of a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard handset with a trackball thrown in for good measure. It's  GSM device so we can expect to see it doing the rounds in Europe. Salomondrin, the ultimate Blackberry ninja no less, managed to secure a fresh tidbit about this handset; apparently it will feature a liquid lens. Liquid lenses essentially mimic how the human eye works when focusing and there would be no moving parts in the camera. Since it's still a relatively new technology, especially when it comes to mobile phones, one wonders whether Dakota might just be something of a high-end beauty ...

Flash 10.1 For Just About Everything Except the iPhone    [ 05-10-2009 16:23 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the most annoying aspects of using the web on a mobile device isthe often dire status of Flash support on said mobile device. Some progress has been made over the years to rectify the situation and more was done this week at Adobe's MAX conference in Los Angeles. The 10.1 update for Flash looks set to work across a variety of paltforms, including mobile paltforms. WinMo and webO will see public betas of 10.1 before 2009 is done and Android and Symbian will follow suit sometime early next year. Not wanting to be left out RIM has signed up to the Open Screen Project, which tries to unify feature sets across different paltforms. RIM will have to wait a while though before it fully catches up with the other smartphones in terms of Flash, but for consumers it's good to see them getting in on the act.

The latest generation of hardware should also help to make Flash support a practical reality on mobiles. Chipsets like Snapdragon are making mobiles powerful enough to handle the extra stress, but at the moment they are still verymuch limited to high-end smartphones. In time though, if these sort of chipsets and new architectures like OMAP4, become more commonplace we could at last be looking at widespread use of Flash on mobile devices.

The following video shows the Palm Pre running Flash.
