O2 to Unlock iPhones    [ 09-11-2009 21:27 ]

O2 UK has come in for a lot of criticism over the past several months with regards to the iPhone. There have been numerous data outages, anger over pricing and outrage at its upgrade polciies, however, it looks like O2 may be building bridges with its iPhone customers. Telefonica Europe CEO Mathew Key confirmed that O2 would allow its iPhone customers to unlock their handsets and move to other networks once their contracts were finished. Mr Key said:

"There is absolutely no truth in that rumour. Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator - though naturally we hope they won't want to!"

Those who are still within the term of their contract can unlock their handsets, but will have to pay the remainder of their contract. PAYG customers who have had their iPhone for 12 months or more can pay £14.97 and have the handset unlocked. It's a bold move from O2 to say the least, but with Orange set to sell the iPhone from tomorrow and Vodafone in January customers will have more choice anyway. Still this is a pretty sweet move by O2 and is sure to be welcomed by its customers.
