Inventor of the Mobile Phone Says They're Too Complicated    [ 06-11-2009 18:12 ]

Convergeance has increasingly become the name of the game when it comes to mobile phones. The current crop of high-end smartphones double up as cameras, camcorders, web browsers, games platforms and lots more besides. Well it seems that not everyone is pleased with this state of affairs, amongst those criticising this trend is none other than the man who invented the mobile phone, Dr. Martin Cooper. Dr. Cooper is the former head engineer at Motorola and is widely credited with having invented the modern mobile phone as well as making the first cellular phone call back in the early 1970s.

Speaking at a privacy conference in Madrid Dr. Cooper said:

"Whenever you create a universal device that does all things for all people, it does not do any things well. Our future I think is a number of specialist devices that focus on one thing that will improve our lives."

It's certainly a good point to make that smartphones tend to be jack of all trade types and masters of none. However, Dr. Cooper does seem to be behind the curve here; dedicated devices are becoming increasingly marginalised, to the point where they are either ultra-cheap and disposable or ultra-expensive and used for very specific purposes outside normal every day use. Sorry Doctor, but the jack of all trades smartphone is here to stay.
