Ericsson AcquiresNortel Assets    [ 27-07-2009 12:18 ]

Even if Sony Ericsson isn't doing too well at the moment parent company Ericsson has a lot to celebrate having just won ana uction for assets belonging to Nortel. The $1.13 billion deal will see Ericsson acquire CDMA technologies and LTE technology as well as some patents from Nortel. It's a significant move because it will almost certainly increase Ericsson's presence in North America and position it for the eventual move to LTE that many networks around the world are edging closer to. Nortel had filed for bankruptcy and despite the hope that it might be able to emerge from bankruptcy as a slimmed down oepration it was not to be. Nortel had a workforce of around 25,000, down from a peak of 90,000, with 3,000 being employed in its wireless division. Ericsson have said that they will be keeping 2,500 of the wireless employees. Ericsson faced competition from Nokia and private equity firm MatlinPatterson and there was a rumoured $1.1 billion bid by Blackberry maker RIM, but Nortel blocked it as RIM wouldn't agree to the confidentiality clause that the other bidders had signed. The Ericsson deal is almost done, it just requires American and Canadian court approval.

Over the past couple of weeks reports have been surfacing that Orange and/or T-Mobile in the UK are set to bag themselves the iPhone 3G and end O2's exclusivity on the handset. Well now another major British network has waded into the speculation. Vodafone's CFO Andy Halford has commented that Vodafone would be interested in selling the iPhone in more of its markets. At the moment Vodafone sells the iPhone in 11 markets across the world, but not in Germany or the UK where T-Mobile and O2 retain exclusive rights respectively. T-Mobile in the UK are even reported to be looking at importing unlocked iPhones to help stem the flow of customers leaving for the iPhone on O2. It's already widely accepted that O2's exclusivity over the older iPhone handset is set to end, the real question now is who will manage to get a slice of the pie ...
