O2 seem to be hitting the rails a bit of lit having encountered a seemingly endless round of problems. With the launch of the iPhone 3G S they created a PR disaster for themselves by launching high priced tethering tariffs that drew much criticism not to mention the fire storm that erupted over their iPhone 3G S upgrade policy, which many saw as being simply greedy. Over the past week or so O2 have gone from bad to worse on the technical front. Their data network crashed across the whole of the UK leaving all non-Blackberry pay monthly customers and some PAYG customers without data acces sor MMS capability. O2 romaing customers encountered another problem when their roaming system failed resulting in romaing customers being unable to use their handsets in several countries. Then there was a fire at a substaion in London which knocked out part of O2's London network.
In the middle of all of this is the news that Orange and/or T-Mobile and possibly Vodafone are almost certainly going to start selling the iPhone 3G in the UK later this year thus breaking O2's monopoly on the handset. It would be quite a blow to O2 given how much they have bet on the success of the iPhone and how tied into it they are now, indeed O2 are said to be 'furious' that their exclusivity is ending. Quite the catalog of disaster there, but it gets worse as today it seems that O2's data network is suffering at least partial problems according to reports from Twitter users. Hopefully for O2's long suffering customers they buck up soon.
