Amazon & Opera Both With Android Apps    [ 07-08-2009 15:57 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Intomobile     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's a good day for Android users, first the news that Samsung is planning on sub-$100 Android handsets next year, and now the news that both Opera and Amazon have Android apps, either launching or in the works. Opera are working on a version of their highly acclaimed mobile browser for Android whilst Amazon have launched an Amazon application for the Android Market. On the Opera front we don't have an app to take a look at yet, well apart from Opera's browsers for other platforms, but not for Android yet. However, they are working on it, as they revealed in a Twitter update recently. The built-in browser that comes with Android is actually reasonably good so many Android users may wonder if this will make much difference to them. Arguably the biggest reason to switch will be Turbo, Opera's client server solution, which compresses websites both increases rendering speed and improves battery life. All in all a good combination of traits for any mobile browser.

The Amazon app is probably best described as both useful and just downright cool. As well as allowing the user to search and browse for products of course it also allows the user to access their Amazon account to track orders, view wish lists, change settings etc. The app is of course buttoned up securely so that shopping on the go won't be a risky business. The app can also make use of the handset's camera to 'remember' products it has photographed. Barcodes are in too, a very handy feature that makes this app even more useful.

LG's GD910 Gets A Teensy Weensy Bit More Affordable    [ 07-08-2009 15:37 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The GD910, LG's much vaunted watch phone, generated a bit of buzz when first revealed, in part for its Dick Tracey/sci-fi overtones, but also due to its price tag. Orange, the network reported to be selling the GD910 in select European markets, was said to be planning to charge around £1,000 for the watch phone. Well it's still out of reach for most people, but the price does seem to have come down a bit, to around £770 with a 24 month contract. Orange presumably don't think they will sell many of these, and given that price they're probably right! It's a shame really, who wouldn't want to have one of these on their wrists, if only for the chance to live out a geeky fantasy?

Samsung to Release Sub-$100 Android Phones    [ 07-08-2009 14:09 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung has been working with Android for a while now, it's Galay handset just about ready for launch. However, all Android handsets so far have bene fairly epensive pieces of kit and the Galaxy doesn't look as if it will change that. Well apparently Samsung think that the market is calling out for a cheap Android handset because they've said that by net year we'll have one. Senior Product Development Manager at Sumsung, Casey Ryan, told the New York Times ..."by next year, touch-screen phones, with full Web browsers running the Android operating system will be available for well under $100." That would be quite a change of pace from today where no Android handset is available on a PAYG basis and where the original G1 is still coming in at $149 on T-Mobile USA. It's also interesting that the phrase 'well under $100' was used. That suggests that this won't be some token gesture of making the handsets $99, but rather a serious attempt at reducing their price to make them more affordable.
